Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

OC-Style TMZ

Burney experienced some big-time sideline star-sightings over the weekend on the OC Prep football field (Paparazzi eat your hearts out!!).
First at Friday's Farmington Hills Harrison-Southfield game, I ran into current starting Michigan tight end and former Harrison SUPERSTAR, Devin Funchess. Yeah, The FUNCHISE himself. When he was with the GREEN MACHINE aka TEAM HERRINGTON, Funchess was a beast of a downfield threat on back-to-back Hawks squads that won a state title in 2010 with a perfect record and then attained a national-ranking the following year in 2011 on a team that finished the regular-season unblemished before losing to Brother Rice in the district finals
Then on Saturday night at the Birmingham Brother Rice-Novi Detroit CC game, I got to say what's up to current Green Bay Packer O-Lineman and former Rice OLD SCHOOL SIR-GRIND-A-LOT T.J. Lang. During his senior year at Brother Rice in 2004, Lang, who played on both sides of the ball, recorded 60 tackles and 9 sacks in the trenches for the Orange&Black before going on to play in college at Eastern Michigan and getting selected in the 4th rd of the 2009 NFL Draft by the PACK and winning a world-championship ring..
Wow, is my job awesome or what?

Cager Grid Confidential

There was some OC HOOP HOUNDS kicking it GRID STYLE Friday night, showing off their respective MAD SKILLZ on the football field;
Merrick Canada (Clarkston) – The Wolves junior cornerback had a 26-yard PICK 6 in C-TOWN's 42-7 smack down of Stoney Creek....during basketball season, Canada, who also plays wide receiver on the gridiron, is a fundamentally-sound sharpshooter and defensive-stopper in the backcourt
Kameron Garner (Southfield Christian) – KAM I AM caught another touchdown pass in SC's clipping of GPW Liggett on the road (I think that's all Garner does these days, make MEGATRON-LIKE catches, he's had a td snare in every Eagles' 'W' so far this fall). Oh, yeah Garner is a steady wing on the two-time Class D state champion SC cage contingent as well
Aaron Rice (Ferndale) – Had two rushing touchdowns in the Eagles 45-6 hogtying of Hazel Park. Rice is rugged and roaring with talent on both the football field and the basketball floor
Nick Robak (Waterford Lakes) – First family of Waterford sports...'NUFF SAID!! Nick "The Brick" (that's how rock-solid this guy is on the gridiron and the hardwood) bagged a pair of touchdown catches (26, 10 yds) in the LAKESHOWS defeat of MH Bishop Foley. Besides being a straight GUNNER in both sports, the NEXT Robak is just as good as all the rest!!

Craving The Rim

South Oakland County prep hoops News&Notes;
Oak Park senior Ja'Christian Biles is blowing up on the recruiting trail – the Knights 6-foot-3 gunner is a Top 20, possibly Top 10 player in the state's Class of 2014. To say he is explosive, both shooting from deep and attacking the tin, is an understatement. Expect him to be one of the area's top scorers. Biles will be in his first year in an Oak Park jersey, enrolling in school late last February after playing the past two seasons at Southfield-Lathrup.
Ferndale University senior Jason Penn, a wiry and athletic 6-foot-7 swingman, has also been impressing college recruiters during this offseason. Penn is a true diamond in the ruff at little known FU, though he did lead his squad to a Class B district title last winter.
Southfield's FANTASTIC freshman Amuri Hardy will most likely be running the point for the Bluejays varsity this upcoming season.
Over at two-time defending Class D state champion Southfield Christian, word is that all-state junior point guard Bakari Evelyn and fast-rising sophomore phenom Marlow Brown have both added multiple inches to their respective frames. Bakari is pushing 6-foot-5 and Marlow 6-6.
Incoming SCS fab frosh Brock Washington, a gritty 6-foot-3 forward, could earn a starting spot for the Eagles this season in their quest for the 3-Peat.
CALLING MY SHOT: The 2013-2014 Southfield Christian CAGE CREW might wind up being the best team in Oakland County, regardless of school-size…..YEAH I SAID IT!!

Call Him Mr. Big Play

Detroit Pistons all-time great Chauncey Billups might be Mr. Big Shot, but here on the gridiron in Oakland County we have Mr. Big Play better known as North Farmington's Chauncey Bridges.
All this kid does is make BIG PLAYS!!!
The Raiders tailback is the area's leading rusher with 785 yards and nine touchdowns.
He's already gone over the 200-yard mark twice in a mere four games for a North Farmington club that is 3-1.
Last week in the Raiders 42-15 trucking of Ferndale, Bridges busted loose for 226 yards and five touchdowns. One of his scores came on an interception he took back to the house for a Pick-6.
That's where his true value kicks in.
For college ball, Mr. Big Play has the ability to do considerable destruction all over the field, whether at running back, defensive back or on special teams as a blazing-fast and instinctive return man.
Coaches and scouts at the next level; take it from Burney, this guy is a SUPERSONIC STEAL. The upside for what he could be doing the next few seasons at a D1 program is LIMITLESS.
Bridges' straight brilliance has single-handedly put North Farmington in the hunt for its second playoff appearance in three years. As a stud sophomore, he started in the secondary for the Raiders' 2011 7-2 squad.
Every time North Farmington steps on the field it has a legitimate chance at winning because of what Bridges does. Frankly, if he wasn't on the team, the Raiders would struggle to find victories. That's the type of game-changing difference-maker this BALLER&SHOT CALLER is.
If you appreciate greatness and like to see electrifying feats on the football field, run, don't walk, out to RAIDERVILLE on the corner of 13 and Farmington Rd. sometime in the next month and take a look at the OC's Mr. Big Play going all ADRIAN PETERSON in the NF Brown and Gold.

Repping The Hometown Proud

A terrific trifecta of former OC prep sports studs were at their dazzling best on the college and pro football field over the weekend.
Let's take a gander at the goods;
Kevonte Martin-Manley (Birmingham Brother Rice) – The Iowa wide out returned not one, but two punts back the house for touchdowns in a span of less than 90 seconds Saturday afternoon, racking up an opulent 185 total special teams yards (2nd most in school history) in the Hawkeyes 59-3 clobbering of Western Michigan.
Matt Wyman (Bloomfield Hills Andover) – The feel-good story of all feel-good stories, Wyman, who was a soccer player in high school, not a football player, kicked an unbelievable 52-yard field as time expired in the Kansas Jayhawks 13-10 downing of Louisiana Tech Saturday. Walking on to the Charlie Weis-led club during spring practice and winning the placekicking job in training camp, Wyman has been ON-THE-MONEY since assuming starting duties. He also booted a 40-yarder earlier in Saturday's game
Dion Simms (Orchard Lake St. Mary's) – This Michigan State alum and Miami Dolphins rookie tight end made sure his first NFL touchdown was a mighty impressive and important one. Cut to: Sims making a highlight-reel one-handed grab with 38 seconds left to lead the Dolphins to an upset 27-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons - cue Sportscenter and NFL Primetime Best of the Weekend packages.
Martin-Manley and Sims were all-state hoopsters in high school as well in their time putting in work in the OC.

Five For Fighting - 5-Star Saturday

Five For Fighting – Saturday's Top Outings on OC Prep Gridiron
1 Jason Alessi (Birmingham Brother Rice) – A dynamic and diverse talent with few equals in the state, if this was a Heisman race, think of Charles Woodson in '97. Check List from Saturday's unreal 26-24 edging of De La Salle; game-winning hail mary touchdown (first snap on offense of his career), 10 tackles from the secondary, 2 fgs and 2 extra points
2 Stoney Creek – DA CREEK is 4 REAL….emphatic 'W' vs OAA Red heavyweight Lake Orion Sat means the Cougars are in the driver's seat for league title…..TEAM ZUBE is gonna win this thing!!! Mark it down!! And YEAH, I SAID IT!!
3 Sean Thomas (Waterford Lakes) – Pro Wrestling used to have The Ultimate Warrior, WOLL has The ULTIMATE WORKHORSE in Thomas…aka 33 carries 200 yards and 2 touchdowns in the LAKESHOW's landslide-victory over Cranbrook
4 Kameron Garner (Southfield Christian) – KAM I AM showing he's more than just a hoop hound this fall, GETTING MAD NICE on the gridiron for the 3-1 Eagles. On Saturday, Garner caught a touchdown and then posted a game-securing PICK 6 late in the fourth quarter of SC's 28-14 downing of MIAC foe Parkway Christian...This kid's like Slim Shady, just going BERZERK!
5 Alex Malzone (Birmingham Brother Rice) – The word UNSHAKABLE comes to mind when I think of what the Warriors Human Highlight Zone did to come out with the win Saturday for his squad……..Malzone went all MONTANA and launched an on-the-money 35-yard bomb into the end zone for Alessi to haul in and send ORANGE&BLACK NATION into a jubilant frenzy. The M is for MAGNIFICENT!!

Well, Look What We Have Here

I saw an exciting prep football player last night at Walled Lake Western that you should know about and who could play a major role in the high-powered Western offense as we get into the thick of things for the 2013 gridiron campaign.
His name is junior tailback Torres Nesbit.
Last night's 44-35 defeat of crosstown rival Walled Lake Northern was his varsity debut – he missed the first quarter of the season with some minor injuries – and he ran like a true pro.
Showing off his speed, strength and natural athleticism, Nesbit rushed for 75 yards and a critical 25-yard touchdown trot up the middle through almost the entire Northern line to kick-off the second half and help the Warriors rally for the thrilling win in the rain
He runs with authority and knows how to protect the pigskin in between the tackles.
The killer instinct near the goal-line seems to be there, too.
When Nesbit was a sophomore last year he tore it up on the JV.
I expect for this newly-found Western flyer to be zooming all around the field for the rest of the fall, aiding a Warriors team that has an excellent chance at claiming a third straight district title and a second league crown in three years. Nesbit's emergence might even be the final piece of the puzzle that propels Western on a return trip to the final four, where senior quarterback Kyle Bambard navigated the Warriors to in 2011 in his first year starting under center for TEAM Z.

Five For Fighting - The Gold Standard

Five For Fighting – MVP race on the OC prep gridiron
1 Kyle Bambard (WL Western SR QB-K) – Most complete player in the area, simply willing his team to the top of the KLAA
2 (tie) Ross Williams (Birmingham Groves SR RB) – Dominant running back with breakaway speed, killer instinct, with a style of rushing the rock that is just as flashy as it is fundamental
2 (tie) Josh Holloman (AH Avondale JR RB) – In Burney's opinion, this Yellow Jackets' gem is the best tailback in the OC….YEAH, I SAID IT!!
3 Johnny Kelley (Oak Park JR RB-CB) – Tornado of a presence on both sides of the ball causing destruction wherever he lines up, tremendous upside at the college level, fierce competitor
4 Alex Malzone (Birmingham Brother Rice QB) – As efficient and deadly as a high school field general can be, has SUPERSTAR written all over him, he's three games into his career as a starter and it looks like three years instead…..RARE talent in every regard!!
5 Dylan Roney (Novi Detroit Catholic Central SR DE-RB) – Pure POWER,POISE &PASSION on the gridiron, a genuine FORCE OF NATURE in so many ways its downright scary!!

It's Been A While

The last time both Waterford public high schools were 2-1 on the football field was 1995.
Shouts out to TEAM FAHR aka the Waterford Mott Corsairs and TEAM SCHULTZ aka the Waterford Kettering Captains for being such BALLERS & SHOT CALLERS!!!
For the first time in quite some time the Mott-Kettering game this fall will almost surely have playoff implications….Kirk Gibson is beaming down in the dugout in AZ with the Diamondbacks with pride…….so is former NFL QB Jim Miller.
MOTT ROLL CALL: J.C. Caldwell (SB-CB) might be the best player in the OC nobody knows about ……..UNTIL NOW!!! J.C. stands for JUST COLDBLOODED!!
KETTERING ROLL CALL: Deonottis Smith (TB) is so MONEY his middle name must be CASH FLOW!!
The last time both Birmingham public high schools were 3-0 on the football field was 1978.
Wow, is the 2013 Seaholm-Groves grid grudge match going to be an INSTANT CLASSIC or what?
A few quick notes;
All Seaholm senior wide receiver Kerry Mott does is catch highlight-worthy touchdown passes…that's all he does, three in three games, each on a big-time play....This kid is made for ESPN's Sportscenter....joining teammates like Jack "The Jammer" Mentag, Aaron "Slick Willy" Ware, Karl "The Manchild" Marback, the Knockout Nastys aka senior secondary studs Dylan Kanaan and Andrew Barton, etc. in the PRIMETIME PLAYA DEPT.
One word to describe Groves senior tailback Ross Williams. Alright, here goes –  LEGEN….wait for it…..DARY!!! Defines the term "Home Run Threat"

Right Said Randy

Birmingham Brother Rice senior baseball star Randy Righter found the right place to play on the diamond in college this week and committed to Bowling Green.
Righter is part of the Rice 8-pack of stars that have been on the Warriors varsity since they were freshman and won back-to-back league and district titles and advanced into the state championship game last spring.
A dual threat, with the ability to do damage on the mound or at the plate, he was a first-team All-CHSL pick in 2012. During the Orange&Black's state-tourney jaunt to Cereal City, Righter tossed three straight shutouts, capped by a vexing effort spinning the pill in the final four vs Howell. From the dish, he shreds with the best around, leading the Warriors with a combined .400 batting average over the past two years.

Here To Stay

The words GARGANTUAN, GINORMOUS AND GALACTIC only start to scratch the surface in describing the 'W' the Waterford Mott football team put on the board Thursday night.
The Fresh &Fearsome Corsairs ARE FOR REAL!!!
They pulled the upset of all upsets for a program that appears headed to the stratosphere at a breakneck pace, out-gunning defending KLAA North Division champ Walled Lake Northern 61-58 on the Knights home field Thursday night.
FREAKING AMAZING!!
What's even more amazing is that second-year Mott head coach Chris Fahr called his shot.
He texted his main man Burney on Wednesday and told me that he guaranteed the upset.
Boy, oh, boy did him and his squad come through big-time or what?
MOTT was in swine heaven GOING HAM all night long, feasting on the Northern 'D'.
Can u say nearly 700 yards of total offense?
Junior field general Dakota Kupp was in MANNING MODE the whole way, connecting on 23-of-34 for 376 yards and a mind-blowing, Peyton-esque 6 TDS
MAD MAD SUPERSONIC PROPS all around in CORSAIRSLAND!!!

Doomsday The Sequel

Godzilla move over.
Orchard Lake St. Mary's Fab Frosh-GRADE-A GRID GLADIATOR Josh Ross is now in the building.
This kid is an absolute MONSTER!!!
Well, first off, he's starting on state-power St. Mary's as only a ninth-grader.
Maybe starting is the wrong way to describe it.
Ross is straight smacking anyone in his vicinity from his spot at middle linebacker, laying serious wood and just SMASHING&THRASHING his way onto the Metro Detroit prep football scene quite loudly and authoritatively.
It's really no surprise when you think of it.
He's the little bro of former St. Mary's All-American and current University of Michigan linebacker James Ross. Yeah, old DOOMSDAY himself!
This might sound crazy considering James is very likely heading to THE LEAGUE, but Josh aka "Baby D" could wind up being better.
The younger Ross was flying all over the field making big plays in the Eaglets' 10-3 Week 2 win over Toledo Whitmer.
Collecting a game-high 10 tackles, he also snared the contest-clinching pick on Whitmer's final drive.
In St. Mary's Week 1 loss to Oak Park – Baby Doomsday's varsity debut – he posted eight bone-jarring wrap ups, repping the family name loud and proud!
Take notice rest of the CHSL, Josh Ross will be a thorn in your sides for the foreseeable future…
