"The Big Classy" and "Mrs. Fourth Quarter" were both straight up monsters Thursday night, getting extra-super-double busy to the tune of raising yet another banner for their teams and corralling some additional hardware for their already overflowing trophy cases. Birmingham Detroit Country Day's Madison "The Big Classy" Williams and Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes' Lauren "Mrs. Fourth Quarter" Robak, two of the best girls hoopstresses in the whole Metro Detroit area, not to mention the entire state, each lived up to their nicknames while leading their respective teams to regional championships by playing big in wins on Thursday night.
God, are these ladies specimens on the hardwood!!!: Williams and Robak are exquisite definitions of what every young, aspiring pre-teen lady hoopster should strive to be both on and off the court.
Marine City Massacre
The best the OC had to offer in the girls cage crew department invaded the quaint Waterfront community of Marine City on Thursday and caused quite a ruckus. Neither DCD nor WOLL, took any prisoners in beating up down a pair of Marine City-based prep squads and advancing to state quarterfinal games.
Country Day hasn't lost a regional crown since 1996. WOLL is set to play in its second Class D quarterfinal in a row. The Lakers' 39-32 conquest over arch-nemesis Marine City Cardinal Mooney avenged last season's loss to the Cardinals in the Elite Eight and snapped a three-year long losing streak to the Cardinals in the state tournament.
The 6-7 Williams (Michigan State) can dominate a game without scoring 20-plus and she did just that in her team's 67-24 clobbering of Marine City HS in a Class B regional final in a game played at Mt. Clemens High School. She scored eight points, took down eight boards, and swatted away four blocked shots. The Big Classy and her fellow DCD captains, Troy Hambric (Loyola) and Imari Redfield, have only lost a total of three games in four seasons of play on the varsity. If the Williams, Hambric, and Redfield wind up taking the 'Jackets to the state title in just over a week from now (it would be the program's third straight and 12th all-time), they will finish their collective career with a overly-gaudy record of 100-3, the best four year run by the storied DCD girls hoops program ever.
Robak showed why she is nicknamed "Mrs. Fourth Quarter" by coming alive in what else but the fourth quarter to spearhead a Lakers' comeback. The Oakland-bound Robak, the ultimate "point forward", scored 13 of her 20 points in the game's final seven and a half minutes to rally her team back from six points down at the start of the heated-affair's final stanza. Putting her game into overdrive to finish things out, Robak registered the fourth quarter's first eight points to place WOLL into a lead they wouldn't surrender.
Only a junior, Robak and the Lakers are looking to capture the first girls bball state title in school history.
