BURNEY WAS SO EXCITED FOR THE START OF THE PREP STATE BASEBALL TOURNEY ON TUESDAY, HE HARDLY GOT ANY SLEEP - INSTEAD CHOOSING TO BREAKDOWN ALL THE BEST PENDING MATCH-UPS OF THE DAY IN HIS HEAD WHILE HE LIED TOSSING AND TURNING UNDER THE COVERS. WELL, THE DAY'S SLATE OF GAMES LIVED UP TO THE HYPE, WITH PLENTY OF THRILLS AND CHILLS TO GO AROUND.
HERE ARE A FEW OBSERVATIONS:
Oxford's Billy Kammerer officially reached SWAGGER LEVEL: ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND TRILLION on Tuesday with a herculean effort in his team's district opener. The KAMMSTER rocketed a walk-off homer for the ages in Wildcats' 5-4 upset-defeat of Lake Orion. He also battled hard on the mound, picking up the win pitching in the monumental Oxford victory. THREE CHEERS FOR BILLY!!! Possibly the single biggest play of the 2010 baseball season so far!
Brother Rice senior first baseman Jason Kelmigian UNLEASHED THE FURY on Birmigham Groves from the dish to the tune of three hits (all doubles), three runs scored and three RBI in the Warriors 9-1 thrashing of the Falcons in a district-opener from the Birmingham Seaholm district. KELMIGIAN has been an underrated, yet very integral component of Rice's mega-success these past three years.
Not to pat myself on the back too hard, but Burney told all of you about how good the Troy Athens pitching staff is a few days back and then they go ahead and make me look so smart on Tuesday: THANKS FELLAS!
Alex Riopelle (9 k's and the 'w') and Ira Land (only allowed one hit in grabbing the save) combined to throw a three-hitter from the hill and propel the Red Hawks past arch-rival Troy 4-1. This is the second year in a row that Athens has eliminated the Colts from the post-season. Burney's boy and Red Hawks offensive stud, Tommy Eng looked might sharp as well on Tuesday in the thick of battle, going YARD over the left field fence in the fifth inning. THESE GUYS ARE 15-16 RIGHT NOW……CAN U IMAGINE WHAT THEY WOULD BE DOING IF JAKE DUZEY HAD DECIDED TO SUIT UP THIS SPRING IN HIS CLEATS INSTEAD OF CONCENTRATING ON HIS FUTURE COLLEGE FOOTBALL CAREER?
POISINOUS ANIMAL ALERT: WL Central's Jake "The Snake" Paulson took home his 11th win of the season against zero defeats on Tuesday in pitching the host-Vikings to a 16-0 pasting of South Lyon. Head coach Mike Roffi likes his team's shot at walking away on Saturday with the district championship in hand and so does BURNEY!
Berkley's Derek Lehman went all DEREK LEHMAN on Tuesday in the Bears 7-6 district-opening besting of Warren Cousino, capping a flawless 4-for-4 outing at the plate with a game-winning single in the eighth inning. I can still hear all the Bears fans chanting, DEREK, DEREK, DEREK, DEREK, some five hours after the game.
