Blogs > Burney's Bytes
Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Burney wishes Clarkston senior Nick Demattia would have come out for the Wolves football squad this fall. If he had, Demattia could have been arguably the best backup quarterback in Metro Detroit.
Last season, he went 7-0 as a starter for the Wolves playing in place of Mitch Baenziger, who went down with an injury in Week 2.
That all said, Burney totally understands his boy Nick's decision to bow out of his prep career on the gridiron to concentrate more on his books and a possible future college career in lacrosse.
It was no secret that if Demattia reported for camp last month, he would have not seen much time on the field unless Baenziger went down again. Demattia obviously did the math in his head and it just wasn't worth it to him personally, which I can totally and do respect.
But you never know what can happen in a football season – look as recently to Cory Clemons heroic performance in Tony Annese's stead over at RH Adams during C-Town's opener, almost single-handily rallying the Highlanders back from a three-touchdown deficit midway through the fourth quarter.
The Wolves quest this year for championship glory could all be derailed in one play and if Baenziger was out of the lineup Clarkston would be in trouble right now. If Demattia was still on the team, on the other hand, there would be a barely noticeable changing of the guard and most likely no drop-off in production. God forbid, if Baenziger is ever forced to the sidelines, starting running back Joey Goss is the Wolves back-up. Goss knows what he's doing under center, as he proved late last year after Demattia fell victim to the injury bug, however, if I personally was a member of the C-Town faithful, I would feel more comfortable with ND back there waiting to get the call in the case of an emergency.
Over his seven games as the team's starter last fall, Demattia showed his merit and a keen instinct on how to stretch opposing defenses, averaging over 200 yards and 2 TDs an outing during his junior campaign. His play quarterbacking the Wolves was a big reason the team made the playoffs in 2010. THAT'S A FACT!!!!
I wish my main Wolfpack homeboy ND the best of luck on all his future endeavors, both athletically and personally. No matter what, Burney knows whatever he chooses to do, Demattia will be repping C-Town to the fullest.
