Training Camp Report - Vikings Victory March

 

Walled Lake Central's 2012 football team has been re-charged with a new batch of talent.

Saying goodbye to a core group of playmakers that led the Vikings to back-to-back district championships, Central head coach, Bob Meyer will be breaking in a fresh gridiron contingent this fall.

After starring in the secondary last year, senior co-captain Eric Costec will most likely start the season as the team's quarterback. Fellow senior co-captain Nick Timmons and fast-rising sophomore Nick Krumm could both also see time under center and will start at wide receiver.

Krumm, the son of Central assistant coach and former NFL safety Todd Krumm, is the field general of the future for TEAM MEYER. As a high schooler himself in the 1980s, Todd Krumm starred on both the football field and baseball diamond locally at West Bloomfield prior to going onto start at free safety at Michigan State, helping take the Spartans to a Big 10 crown and win in the Rose Bowl in 1987.

Zac Goor, another sophomore standout who, like the younger Krumm, played on varsity as a FAB FROSH in 2011, and junior Nick Adamowski, will see the lion's share of the team's carries in the backfield.

Meyer's defense will be highlighted by WORKHORSE linebacker and senior co-captain Matt Boulus and linemen Devyn Bogert and Mike Dobrolowski, a pair of SIR-GRIND-A-LOTS in the trenches. Boulus follows in the footsteps of departing co-captains Zac Leimbach (Michigan State) and K.J. Schultz (Kalamazoo College) and is a three-sport STUD for VIKINGSNATION, also lettering in basketball and baseball. Bogert is an all-league performer in track and field during the spring.

Bryan Maxwell, a strong-footed senior and soccer star, heads Central's special teams unit and will provide Meyer and his staff a consistent presence in the kicking game.

Boding well for Meyer's club learning curve is the fact that unlike the past couple of years where they've been forced to open their schedule with state power Canton, this season they open against Saginaw Heritage, a team that went 5-4 last year.

The Vikings have qualified for the D2 playoffs in each of the past three campaigns. In 2010 and 2011, they've claimed league titles and in 2011 they advanced all the way into the final four. Last fall, Central won a district crown before losing to Utica Eisenhower in the regional finals.
