The Bloomfield Hills Lahser boys basketball team was dealt some bad news over the weekend when the Knights learned that their best player, 6-foot-8 all-league junior center Yante Maten, will miss the next 6-to-8 weeks with a chipped bone in his foot.
Maten, a heavily-coveted Division I college recruit on the heels of a breakout sophomore season last winter where he averaged a double-double and took Lahser to both OAA Division and district championships, hurt himself in the Knights opening-night victory against South Lyon back on Tuesday and is expected to return in February.
In the South Lyon game, it was hardly evident that Maten had injured himself. He decimated the Lions for 15 points, 17 rebounds and seven blocks, picking up exactly where he left off last year.
Expect to see fellow junior standouts Armand Cartwright and Khalil Gracey step up to fill the void on offense and defense in Maten's absence - they are both all-league selections in their own right. Cartwright, the team's pace-setting point guard, who can also go on scoring tears, had 13 points and six assists in Lahser's loss to Clarkston Friday night, Gracey, a super smooth 6-foot-6 wing, put up a game-high 19 points and corralled eight rebounds.
