Some names you should know about from the Miracle Maples Part 2 aka the 1993 Birmingham Seaholm varsity football team – the squad that took out Birmingham Brother Rice 14-13 in the district-opener to give the Maples their one and only win over the fearsome Orange&Black on the football field
Doug Fraser – The head coach: led MaplesNation to three league titles and a district crown in 1997. Fraser won 70 games in his decade on the sidelines (87-97), including skippering the '93 club into the playoffs (one of 5 trips into the postseason) and to the upset of mighty Rice. Just got back on the sidelines, assuming the reins at Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook this fall.
Lloyd Abramson – The injured superstar: was the Big 10-bound quarterback that got hurt towards the end of the year, but WAS Seaholm football in the early 1990s. Continued his career under center at Northwestern, where another injury prevented him from quarterbacking the Wildcats' '95 league-championship team.
Bill Feldmaier – The searing-hot back-up: Only a sophomore, Feldmaier was called on to take over as the Maples field general when Abramson went down and played like a seasoned pro. He guided the squad into the playoffs and in the Rice game managed a perfect game calling signals, keeping the bigger, stronger and faster Warriors defenders honest with his smart and steady effort that day. Feldmaier would go on to play quarterback in college at the University of Buffalo and then Ithaca.
Jeff Smokevitch – The diamond in the rough: This gritty linebacker quietly helped spark Seaholm's 'D' that year and the year after, before going on to play a the University of Michigan, becoming a key 'Rudy"-like practice player for the Wolverines '97 National Championship team
Dennis Callaghan – The anchor in the trenches; A pure definition of toughness and relentlessness at the point of attack, Callaghan went on to be a D1AA All-American at UConn, winning a National Championship-ring.
