Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Soccer School 101 - OC Keeps Kicking

Oakland County has put on a clinic over the past five days in the soccer department. Four county schools have  recently advanced into the Final Four in the state tournament.

Burney sends major kudos to the teams over at Birmingham Brother Rice ("Goon Squad" included), Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook and Rochester Hills Adams for surviving and advancing tough regionals and making  to the semi-finals. All four teams took home regional titles with impressive shut-out wins.

These teams all brought its proverbial "A" game last week and it showed in the box scores.

Adams edged past Utica Eisenhower in a D1 regional championship match 2-0 courtesy of two goals from senior captain  Joey Dillon and another immaculate performance in between the pipes by senior goalie Kevin Soisson. The Highlanders are scalding hot, having not lost a game in over a month.

Cranbrook took down Dexter 3-0. The Cranes got the job behind one goal and one assist apiece by Andy Holmes and a stellar job in net by Andy Rouff, who ended up sending away 12 Dexter shots on goal.

DCD romped to yet another regional championship by demolishing a clearly-out of its league Imlay City team 3-0. Senior  forward Ben Weinstein continued his playoff scoring rampage by notching two goals and sophomore mid-fielder Tariq Akeel, already one of the county's premiere playmakers in the open field, scored one.

Brother Rice eeked out a pair of 1-0 games in its regional at Troy to walk away with the crown. Cody Hall's goal led the Wariors to a win over of UofD-Jesuit in the semi and then Pete Hensoldt's score carried the team past Novi in the championship game.

Good Luck in the Final Four boys. Burney will be rooting for ya!
