Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

The Great Burnzini Returns - District Picks part 1

Here are my first set of picks for the top boys hoops districts being played this week:
Class A
Flint Carmen-Ainsworth
Local Teams – Holly, Ortonville Brandon
Pick – I've had a feeling all season long that this is Holly's year and I'm not going to be jumping off the bandwagon now. The Bronchos have a super-tough district with fellow Flint Metro powers, Swartz Creek, Fenton, and Grand Blanc, all lurking in the shadows , but head coach Lance Baylis and his boys will get it done in the end and send the entire town of Holly into a state of hoops heaven.
 Novi
Local Teams – Novi, Novi Detroit Catholic Central
Pick – CC will pull the upset in the first round, knocking off a very good Novi squad and go on to raise its second straight district banner by late Friday night.
Southfield
Local Teams – Southfield, Southfield-Lathrup, Ferndale, Oak Park
Pick – Southfield's superstar backcourt of Carlton Brundidge and Pee Wee Barnes are extra-determined and won't let the Blue Jays lose. In the end, "B&B" and their Blue Jays crew, will be celebrating the programs first district championship in well over two decades.
West Bloomfield
Local Teams – West Bloomfield, Orchard Lake St. Mary's, North Farmington, Farmington, Farmington Hills Harrison, Walled Lake Western
Pick – To say head coach Tom Negeoshian's North Farmington squad is battle-tested would be a gross understatement – the Raiders 13-7 final regular season record is deceiving due to an inordinate amount of buzzer-beaters and OT affairs. The experience in down-to-the-wire contests pay dividends for North Farmington and the Raiders raise the banner for the first time in five years.
 Birmingham Groves
Local Teams – Groves, BH Andover, Birmingham Brother Rice, Birmingham Seaholm, Berkley, Royal Oak
Pick – If regular season records are any indicator, Seaholm should be able to take home its first district crown since 1997. However, the road is a lot tougher than it looks for the top-heavy Maples. Supporting players like Christian "Master P" Pino, Buddy Ellis, Chris Smith, and Jack Quigley will all have to bring their "A" games into the state tournament if Seaholm wants to win the trophy. I think they will, but not before the Maples edge past Rice and Andover in very tight affairs.
Waterford Kettering
Local Teams – Kettering, Waterford Mott, Pontiac, AH Avondale, Troy, Troy Athens
Pick – Mott is on a mission, plain and simple. Senior sniper John Schaeffer and sophomore phenom, Chris "Rip City" Dewberry, will shoot the Corsairs into the regionals.
Clarkston
Local Teams – Clarkston, RH Adams, Stoney Creek, Lake Orion, Oxford, Rochester
Pick – I don't know why and it's probably going to end up being to my ultimate detriment, but I'm picking the SUPERSONIC UPSET SPECIAL here and will say that Clarkston fails to pick up a district for the first time in an almost unfathomable 17 seasons. I'm predicting that Adams clips C-Town in OT on Monday and an Adams-Stoney Creek showdown on Friday in the finals goes to the…..drumroll please…………………………Cougars!!!!!! Get double busy by main homeboy, Jake Fortner!!!!
