Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Stats of The Day

Some interesting statistical tidbits about local prep baseball history:
Rochester's Andrew Good (1998), collected an insane 24 consecutive victories on the mound between his sophomore season in 1996 and his junior year in 2007.
You might think at the very least, this would be a county if not state record, right? Nope, you would be wrong, since Jack Tompkens of the old Royal Oak High School pitched his way to 27 straight wins between 1925 and 1927.
In the Falcons glorious state championship spring of '97, Good – drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the summer of '98 – put up an ERA of .050 in 70 1/3 innings of work.
Southfield's David Holmes stole a remarkable five bases in a single game against crosstown-foe Southfield-Lathrup in 1998.
Dave Pesci of Farmington Hills Harrison had 11 RBI in a single game in 1998, only one shy of a state record.
Quick side-comment: it appears a lot of great baseball was being played in this area in 1998, or at the very least lots of great stats were being posted.
A.J. Rowe of Novi struck out 20 batters in the Wildcats' opening day win over Brighton in 2000.
DCD diamond great, Ryan Keyes (1994-1997), had a career batting average of .551, second all-time in state history
Birmingham Seaholm's Steve Williams threw an overly-impressive 5 complete game shutout victories in 1993.
In 1997, Jeff Trzos of North Farmington registered an ERA of .074 over 76 innings of work.
Between his sophomore and junior campaigns (2002-2003), BH Andover's Rob Campbell put together a remarkable 47-game hitting streak.
Andover's Chris Marshall registered a batter-baffling .069 era in the 2004 season.
Birmingham Roeper's Tommy Poole got hit by 23 pitches in 1995, one off the state record.
