Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Five For Fighting - Athlete of The Year

OC Top 5 – Athlete of The Year (Boys)
1 Kevonte Martin-Manley (Brother Rice) – Best wide receiver and shooting guard in the county, possibly best football-basketball combo special in the state outside of Shawn Conway
2 Ray McCallum (DCD) – even though "Big Play Ray" only played one sport, he played it so well he deserves his second-place nod without question.
3 Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston) – I simply run out of superlatives when I talk about this kid! SUPER ATHLETE, SUPER LEADER, SUPER STUDENT (Michigan Tech lucked out when GVSU inexplicably decided to pass up giving him the spot on its roster in mid-January……I love the me some Lakers Football, but Burney has only one thing to say to that……BIG MISTAKE
4 Mitch Kozlowski (MH Lamphere) – As Tina Turner once said, THA KOZ MAN is SIMPLY THE BEST! I can't decide if my main man, Mitch, is a better wide receiver, point-guard, or centerfielder? What do u guys think?
5 a. Allen Robinson (OL St. Mary's) – Its going to be flat out scary to see my man, "Al B Sure" tearing it up on the football field and bball court next year…..will go head-to-head with Shawn Conway for the county's best two-sport stud in 2011!
b. Jake Duzey (Troy Athens) – definition of a beast whether on the gridiron or in the paint. Burney's sad the Duzey didn't come out for the baseball team this spring. I loved watching him swing the bat last year.
c.  Shawn Conway (Seaholm) – should realistically be much higher on this list this year and is the front-runner for Burney's No. 1 Athlete of The Year next year!
OC Top 5 – Athlete of The Year (Girls)
1 Lauren Robak (WOLL) – STATE TITLE…..enough said
2 Jenna Bachrouche (North Farmington) – Hoop Queen and a jewel on the soccer field too!
3 Jordan Wheatley (Troy) – A true warrior!
4 Krista Hakola (WL Central) – WORKHORSE with a capital W.O.R.K.H.O.R.S.E!!!
5 Madison Williams (DCD) – the likes of this superbly-talented and graceful post-presence will be dearly missed next bball season when THA OC's very own, "BIG CLASSY" is doing her THANG in THA EL!
