Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Bonus Bytes - Rapid Fire

Burney is very sad to see longtime Pontiac athletic director Tarlton Small leave due to retirement but is very happy to see former Phoenix defensive coordinator and Greg Ganfield disciple, Brad Zube coming in as the new football coach. DO I SMELL ANOTHER PLAYOFF RUN IN THE PURPLE GANG's NEAR FUTURE? I think I do
The defending D1 state football champs, the Novi Detroit CC Shamrocks will be captained this year by seniors Justin D'Agostino, Brandon Tammaro, Andrew Nelson, Andrew Erickson and Nate Wilkins. Congrats fellas! Now, go out and lead the 'Rocks to a second straight wooden mitten for the already crowded school trophy case.
Side Note: Since Nelson had so many key picks and break-ups from his spot in the CC secondary last season, I've decided to nickname him "The Spiderman", 'cause this kid casts a web of displeasure on all QB and receivers that try to ply their trade in his vicinity
Props also go out to DA DYNASTY, an AAU hoops squad from southeast Oakland County for winning the state championship for the 16 and under division. DA DYNASTY are headlined by a pair of MH Bishop Foley Ventures in Jordan Walker and Corey Green.  Playing excellent on both ends of the court, Green earned the MVP award in the state title game. His teammate Walker, one of the more skilled big men in the area, took home MVP honors in the team's regional round victory back in May.
Novi's "Big Sham Wow" aka Samier Ozier, one of the top inside-outside threats on the OC prep bball scene going into his senior year in 2011 is taking visits to Harvard, Cornell, Lafayette, Bucknell and Duquesne this summer. This kid can obviously get his STUDY ON as well as he can get his HOOP ON!
It's nice to see DCD star hoopsters Amir Williams and Lee Bailey reunited on the court as teammates with former Yellow Jacket and current North Farmington Raider, Urbane Bingham. The trifecta of county cage studs are currently all playing together for a Nike-sponsored USA all-star team that is currently barnstorming across Europe. As soon as the team returns, Bailey will be switching over to gridiron mode and start preparing for his senior season as the lead ball carrier and top DB for the juggernaut 'Jackets football squad, a favorite for a D3 state title this fall.

In case no one mentioned, Stars Basketball team won the 16 U AAU State Championship in Detroit, May 16th. Headlined by Junior Connor Tava of DeLasalle, and Junior Chris Dewberry of Waterford Mott. Tournament Honors and MVP distinction went to the two. The team qualified also compete in Orlando for their second year in row in the Div I National championship in Orlando. Their State Championship photo and coach contact information is available at Starsbasketballtraining.com.Interesting mix of talented players from CHSL Central Division, St.Mary's, Brother Rice, Delasalle, and some publics. Would like to see a picture of Stars team, player names, schools attended, appear in OP as Dynasty's did recently. In the sense of fairness to both teams and both their great accomplishments. Thank you Mr. Buckley
