Blogs > Burney's Bytes
Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

CLASSY LAKERS SHINE ON CAMPUS AND OFF
Okay, so Burney is as far away from being Catholic as humanly possible (I'm Jewish!) and attended a rival high school, but he loves himself some Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes like nobody's business. The entire Lakers community, players, coaches, fans and parents are as Tina Turner once said, SIMPLY THE BEST! – Total class all the way through no matter what sports the kids in the Blue and White are playing.
And judging by some recent news, even after leaving the hallowed school grounds off Dixie Highway, the Lakers alumni contingent STAYS CLASSY years after graduation.
Exhibit A:
Former WOLL basketball standout, Katie Knake, is the walking definition of CLASS and COMPOSURE and a few years back started, The Hero Foundation, a non-profit organization that donates money to research pancreatic cancer and supports families of those stricken with the disease. On Aug 28, the foundation, headed by Knake, whose father, Al, recently beat "THE BIG C" with flying colors, will be holding its second annual AL Knake Golf Outing, to raise money for the disease, which is one of its most deadly forms, having only a 5% survival rate.
Knake was a two-time all-state selection for WOLL in the mid-1990s, spearheading the school's girls hoops program to consecutive Class D Final Fours in 1994 and 1995. Her brother, Jason, was an all-conference shooting guard on the 1994 boys bball squad that equaled his sister's accomplishment and made a run into the state semifinals.
Oh, and on the subject of PURE, UNADULTERATED CLASSINESS, let's talk about a few current Lakers sports studs!!!
Well, first off there is all-state senior girls hoopster Lauren Robak, the catalyst for WOLL' state championship last March. This girl is SO MONEY, I suspect she lives her offseasons in a bank vault to stay close to her kind!
What about fab frosh Ava Doetsch and Lexi Robak? These young ladies were major cogs flanking Robak throughout the squad's thrilling state title run.
Then there's Megan Topolewski, the captain of the school's girls soccer team that took home a state title in June despite the program only being in its fourth year of existence.
And in case u didn't know, ALL THESE GRADE A ATHLETES are coming back for another shot at state championship glory this upcoming school year.
Let's not forget my LAKER HOMEBOYS, Mike "Sully the Sidewinder" Sullivan, Austin "AK-47/27" Karbowski, Anthony "The Koz Man" Caiozzo and Paul "The Plow" Goeddeke, all multi-sport sensations at the school heading into their senior years. Sullivan is a top rate QB in football, getting ready to lead WOLL to its fourth straight playoff appearance with him at the helm calling signals. The KOZ is a vicious running back, who tears it up whenever he has the ball in his hands. Karbowski and Goeddeke are just bonafide thoroughbreds at whatever sports they are playing. Just like Sullivan could be the best field general you might have not heard about, AK-47/27 could be the best baseball player in the county that nobody knows about.
What about the coaches?:
Mike Boyd = LEGENDARY!
Steve Robak = AWESOME!
Rich Ludwig = UNBELIVABLE!
