Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Bonus Bytes - Random Thoughts

I got chills standing next to prep football legend Mill "The Thrill" Coleman on Fri night at the FH Harrison Hawks game!!
It's official: Burney has now started the LAUREN ROBAK for 2010 Miss Basketball Award campaign!!
Burney's Biggest Surprises of 2010 Prep Football Season Through Week 2: WL Northern & Clawson being 2-0, Rice Being 0-2, the emergence of Pontiac junior RB Mark Cargle (6 TDs in 2 games), the continued overwhelming success of the Hazel Park offense after losing almost the entire unit from last season's playoff squad (Senior RB Dakota Ogles, over 500 yards and an INSANE 11 TDs)
Name To Watch For – Ed Huckabee a rising defensive gem for the FH Harrison Hawks as only a sophomore. Huckabee, son of former UofMichigan running back Harlan Huckabee, had 6 tackles and one major league sack in the fourth quarter of his team's Week 2 win over Southfield
I was recently reminiscing about the good ole' days in local high school hoops and I came to the conclusion that the 1993 Walled Lake Central basketball team is my favorite prep squad in history. 25-1, undefeated regular season, conference, district, and regional champs, and were the first group to bring "Rick Pitino-style" basketball to the Metro Detroit area. SHOUT OUT 2 '93 VIKES…Christian Emert, Ronnie Thompson, Eric Leaf, Justin Cherfoli, Chris MacFarlane, Adam McCarthy, Mike Gluski, Josh Chestnut, Dave Johnston and CO.
Novi's Matt Carney is the best high school sports play-by-play announcer in the ENTIRE STATE!!! And u can TAKE THAT 2 THE BANK
Oxford's tailback tandem of Prescott Line and Anthony McDougald is very UNDERRATED and will by themselves carry the 'Cats to a few victories this year.
Burney is very happy the former Seaholm football coach Doug Fraser is back on the county prep football landscape, resurfacing this season at BH Cranbrook as an assistant. The Cranes are super lucky to have him!
