Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Football Fiesta

Things I'm most looking forward to for the upcoming prep football season;
The brand new SMURF TURF at Oxford
Lake Orion fourth-year signal caller Sean Charrette returning in full form from his season-ending injury last season to lead the Dragons on their quest for a repeat state title
Seeing Greg Carter roaming the sidelines at Oak Park, resurrecting the Knights program and doing it FAST!!
The Farmington Hills Harrison Hawks hammering the comp at every opportunity, effectively changing the lyrics to the popular song 'Black and Yellow' to 'Green and Yellow' in Oakland County for the 2011 season
Watching the Clarkston linebacking tandem of Matt Dellinger and Zack Collins on the prowl and DESTROYING all in their vicinity
Getting the chance to cover, engage and appreciate up close LEGENDARY local head coaches like Al Fracassa (Birmingham Brother Rice), Tom Mach (Novi Detroit CC) and John Herrington (FH Harrison) among others
The ole 'OC Gunslinger' himself aka Auburn Hills Avondale senior quarterback Mitch Robinson putting up another MONSTER campaign with the Yellowjackets
Rochester Hills Adams 'Mr. Do Everything' aka senior Tony Annese literally picking the Highlanders up, putting them on his back and carrying them into contention for another OAA White crown and another berth in the postseason
Finally getting a first-hand look at Southfield transfer Ron Thompson, one of the best tight ends and most heavily recruited players in the state
Tracking the rapid development of Novi Detroit Catholic Central's brand new 'Thunder&Lightning' backfield of juniors Wyatt Shalman (aka Thunder) and Anthony Darkangelo (aka Lightning)
Orchard Lake St. Mary's senior middle linebacker James Ross going all JAMES ROSS!!!
Ross' teammate Keith Stonestreet having a BREAKOUT campaign for the Eaglets catching the ball, running ball and returning kicks
Birmingham Brother Rice being Brother Rice
The second year of OAA crossover action in October…..great concept!!!
Walled Lake Central's Zac Leimbach…..ENOUGH SAID!!
The coming out party for Lakeland's Chuck Sanders, who will make fans of the KLAA think the Eagles have Barry Sanders on offense for the Eagles
