Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

The Gridiron Watch List

Players to watch out for on the prep football field this fall;
Denzel Manning (RB MH Madison) – Even though Manning has some pretty big shoes to fill in the Eagles backfield with departure of all-state speedster Valdez Showers – now playing in the ACC at Florida –, Burney expects him to put up similar numbers this year
Andrew Shafkalis (LB Lake Orion) – Shafkalis kept coming huge up on 'D' for the Dragons in their run to the D1 state title in 2010 and he will continue to do so in 2011
Kimani Elliott (RB West Bloomfield) – Elliott is poised to shine in the upcoming season as the Lakers starting tailback
Cortez Hardrick (WR West Bloomfield) – Like Elliott, Hardrick is set for a breakout campaign come the fall.
Ben Bartnowak (QB Troy Athens) – Entering his third-year under center, Bartnowak will be one of the Class of 2012's top passing threats in Oakland County
Keith Stonestreet (WR/KR OL St. Mary's) – This slick and elusive playmaker will flourish this year as the Eaglets' No. 1 receiving option
Marlon Hairston (LB Birmingham DCD) – Hairston is relentless from sideline-to-sideline and will help head the Yellowjackets defense this season
Patrick Duggan (LB Birmingham DCD) - I LOVE THIS KID's GAME....ALL HEART & EMOTION...and oh, yeah, A LOT OF BIG_TIME TACKLES
Chuck Sanders (ATH Lakeland) – When it's all said and done on this juggernaut junior's high school athletic career, he will go down as one of the best to ever don an Eagles jersey in both football and basketball……Burney says;TAKE IT 2 THE BANK!!!
Travis Smith (S/WR Clarkston) – Smith is the 'X-Factor' in the C-Town attack this fall and he's going to go BUCK WILD on both sides of the ball, sparking the Wolfpack to an OAA Red crown
Robert Aiello/Kyle Shailes (WR Lake Orion) – Aiello and Shailes will stretch the field for the Dragons in 2011, giving fourth-year starting quarterback Sean Charrette, a formidable pair of wide outs to play catch with all season long
Lorenzo Collins (RB FH Harrison) – Collins will be a SOPHOMORE SENSATION in the backfield for HAWKSNATION this fall
Neal Page (DL Birmingham Seaholm) - Might be the most underrated pass rusher in the county
Mike Fisher (LB RH Adams) - Fisher will spearhead Coach Partrito's always nails-tough defensive unit with his usual gusto...a real throwback, the type of player that doesn't need headlines to get motivated
