Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Euro Invasion

Oakland County has been developing an increasing European influence on its local prep basketball scene.
It started two years ago when Birmingham Detroit Country Day's Adam Zavadil came to town from the Czech Republic and helped take the Yellowjackets to a state championship in 2010.
Now, here comes the new breed. And he's an absolute BEAST on the hardwood.
Specifically, his name is Miroslav Jaksik and he's a 6-foot-10 swingman who is enrolled at Walled Lake Western.
Think Dirk Nowitzki meets Drazen Petrovic…I'm not joking. This is not hype. This is the REAL DEAL HOLYFIELD. Jaksik, known as "Milo" is a MONSTER!!!!!
Top put it as simply as humanly possible – This kid is about to set the county prep hoops landscape ON FIRE!!!!!!
Playing his first two years of high school ball in Canada, this native Serbian has already hit the D1 college recruiting radar and his stock is in the process of going OFF THE CHARTS following a recent set of impressive workouts around the area. Last winter he averaged 25 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three blocks per contest and was selected to play on TEAM CANADA's 16-U squad.
This summer he moved in with his uncle and aunt in Wixom, betrothing upon the Walled Lake Western Warriors and their new head coach Ra'Redding Murray, a gift of epic proportions. Jaksik will be one of the state's top recruits in the Class of 2013 and could very easily challenge the Chosen One himself aka James Young of Troy for bragging rights as best prepster in the OC by the conclusion of the 2012 campaign.
Word of Jaksik's talent is already attracting the big boys in the recruiting game. UofM, Michigan State and Indiana have all made recent visits to open gym sessions at WL Western to scope out this WARRIOR DIAPER DANDY!!!!!
Murray will also benefit from another transfer this upcoming season in 6-4 forward Aaron Primm, who followed Murray from his previous coaching gig at Detroit Osborne, and freshman point guard Jalen Gardner, a ninth-grade floor general expected to be one of the area's best underclassmen. Last year as a junior, Primm led Osborne to a Class B district title.
Don't be surprised if Murray, Jaksik, Primm, Gardner and company take Western to a KLAA championship and challenges for the program's first trip to the Elite 8 in over a decade.
With Zavadil graduating from DCD in May, his shoes as the Yellowjackets resident EURO CAGE FIEND will be filled by 6-foot-9 Robert Ivanavic, a senior transfer from Lithuania who already has offers from more than one mid-major D1 school.
