Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Eight At The Lake

The 2008 Lake Orion boys basketball team wasn't great (They were a good, competitive bunch).
That said, the Dragons hoop squad that year had some great athletes on it, guys that went on to have stellar careers in their chosen sport after leaving the halls of Lake Orion.
Drew Maynard – The Dragons TOP DAWG on the hardwood during the late 2000s, garnering nationwide college recruiting interest and making himself a candidate for Mr. Basketball, while torching the nets (he put in a career-high 48 in a game as a senior that season) and viciously attacking the rim with his high-flying slam-dunk antics on the fast break. A three-year Class A all-state pick, Maynard chose to play in college locally at Oakland (starting at the '3' in his time as a Golden Grizz), before leaving the program and heading down to Valdosta State, only to return to the area triumphantly this past winter with Rochester College and winning a USCAA National Championship. He's about to head overseas to play as a pro. An athletic and versatile 6-foot-7 who can line-up on the wing or in the backcourt, his upside in the Euro pro leagues is tremendous.
Jeff Heath – The "little engine that could that's not so little", Heath was a sharpshooting guard on the '08 Dragons cage crew and is now in the NFL as a safety with the Dallas Cowboys. Starring at wide receiver, defensive back and placekicker in his time on the prep gridiron with LO, he stenciled himself into the history books the following fall by booting a miracle 48-yard field goal in the state semis to send the Dragons to Ford Field. Just recently finished a standout pigskin career in college at Saginaw Valley State and signed with the Cowboys as a UFA.
Anthony Fields – Starting floor general for the '08 Laketown baller brigade, he's currently playing DI hoops at the college level, first in the ACC with Wake Forest and now at Bradley University.
Chris Lum – Starting power forward for the '08 Dragons on the basketball floor, Lum was an all-state quarterback on the gridiron. The consummate workhorse around the bucket as a hoopster, he went on to have an outstanding career in the college ranks at Lehigh, graduating in 2012 one of the Mountain Hawks all-time great field generals.
Vinnie Booker – Reserve guard on the '08 LO bball team, showing off his endless motor and always delivering his textbook grit off the bench for then-Dragons head coach Jim Manzo. Booker was a three-sport stud in high school that just finished a college baseball career as a captain and starting centerfielder at Western Michigan. On the football field, he was an instinctive and hard-hitting safety that helped spark LAKENATION to the state championship the next fall.
