Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Blooming This Spring

As the Motor City finds itself enraptured in the MLB playoffs this week, I started thinking about the upcoming 2014 baseball season in the OC.
My mind immediately drifted to the West Bloomfield Lakers.
TEAM PIERCE is going to be a dandy this spring.
The transfer of Central Michigan-commit and MLB Draft prospect Dazon Cole (P/SS/CF) from Pontiac makes the WB instant contenders for Battle Creek.
Even before Cole landed in LAKERLAND, the WB diamond brigade had one of the most potent two-packs of stars in the area in junior hurler Chandler Sedat and senior middle infielder Josh Birnberg.
Now that Cole is in the mix along Orchard Lk Rd, the combination of him and Sedat on the mound is as formidable as any in the state!
They even match-up on par with that downright dirty duo of Matt Ruppenthal and Randy Righter over at world-beater Birmingham Brother Rice.
That's how FILTHY the twin arms of Cole and Sedat are.
Birnberg is the consummate pro and a true gamer in every way at the plate with his bat, in the field with his glove and in the dugout with his leadership ability.
Don't be surprised if the LAKESHOW steals the show this spring and plays spoiler in districts to a stacked Brother Rice club that will be favorites to make a return-trip to CEREAL CITY
YEAH, I SAID IT!!

While Dazon Cole (ranked #3, 2014 by PBR MI), Chandler Sedat (#8, 2015) and Josh Birnberg (#125 2014) are an integral part of the Laker squad, you always seem to forget the other talented players that make-up the team. They include returning starters, infielder Daiki Nishioka (#126, 2014), centerfielder Robbie Jones (#20, 2015) relief pitcher Zach Oshinsky (2014), infielder Zach Allread (2015) and catcher Jake Seidel (2014). They also make up the team and deserve some of the love. Bottom line is that they are a TEAM and that is why the LAKESHOW will have a chance at a run!
