Blogs > Burney's Bytes
Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

They say 'The pen is mightier than the sword.'
Well, that's certainly the case when you're discussing what Ferndale University senior boys basketball star Jason Penn does on the hardwood.
He's raw, he's lethal and he's ready to do serious damage at the next level.
The 6-foot-7 'diamond in the ruff' signed with UofM-Dearborn to play his college hoops over the weekend.-
This is great value for the "other' Wolverines (8-22 in 2014).
Penn silently sliced and diced the local Class B prep hoop ranks these past couple seasons, working the inside and the outside with his extreme length and athleticism. This winter he averaged 23 points and 12 rebounds per outing on an 18-3 club. Last year, he posted 22 points and 14 boards a night.
With Penn anchoring the lineup, Ferndale U was spending a significant chunk of time in VICTORY LANE (31-12). As a junior in 2013, he spearheaded the program to its first-ever district championship, scoring 26 points and corralling 13 rebounds in an upset of cross-town rival Ferndale on the road in the district finals .
Burney thinks Penn+U-M Dearborn = a match made in WOLVERINE HEAVEN!!
No worries Ferndale U fans, the Penn family isn't leaving you guys high and dry so to speak; Jason's baby bro, Justin, is in the fold for the next two years.
