Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Playoff Primer - Random Thoughts

Brother Rice head coach, Al Fracassa - the OC's very own Vince Lombardi mixed with Joe Paterno - is the definition of a coach/teacher/master motivator. I'm not even catholic and if I had a son in high school who wanted to play football there is no other head coach i'd rather he play under than Fracassa
Speaking of Fracassa and his sideline prowess, I think it was a smart move to get junior QB Tyler Lendzion in the mix under center taking snaps for the playoffs. Last week in the District opener on the road at WL Central, the Warriors' offense looked as sharp as its been all year. Combining the styles of Lendzion - a more athletic field general - and senior three year starter Frankie Popp - the prototypical drop back passer - gives Rice a more versatile attack.Lendzion led two Rice scoring drives and scored two rushing td's against the Vikings. During the Warriors recent 3 game losing streak, the offense had gotten stale and predictable. The addition of Lendzion to the playbook will keep District Final opponent Adams on its toes. Great move by an expert-tactician like Fracassa.
To: Clarkston head coach Kurt Richardson and the whole Wolves team.

I promise to never pick against you guys again !!!! I've learned my lesson the last two weeks
FH Harrison senior quarterback Vince "The Prince" Salatino is bananas, B.A.N.A.N.A.S!!!
Southfield's Alonso Graham - 56 yard TD reception and forced fumble and recovery on 'D' last week in Rd 1 against Berkley at home- is an underrated playmaker.
I'm extra excited for a match up of the county's two best junior QB's in this weekend district final between DCD and Madison Heights Lamphere. The Yellowjackets Josh Harris and the Rams' Ryan Horvath will stage an old fashioned shoot-out at the Ok Coral on Saturday night under the lights at Country Day.
