Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

The Great Burnzini - And The Beat Goes On

A gaggle of great teams from THE OC danced their way out of districts and into the upcoming week of regionals, with their respective minds focused on getting to the state quarterfinals next week.

Without further ado, heere are the Great Burnzini's Regional Picks:
Class A
Hartland – North Farmington, Walled Lake Northern, Novi, AA Huron
Pick – North Farmington's overly-treacherous schedule is paying off in the playoffs. Longtime head coach, Tom Negoshian and star player, Kyle "The Natural" Vinales squeeze past "The Sham Wow" himself, Samier Ozier and Novi in Friday's final to capture the program's first regional title in school history.
Lake Orion – Clarkston, Brother Rice, Southfield, Pontiac
Pick – This region is an all Oakland County affair and wow what a showdown these three games should be. Each and every one of these squads has a legit shot at taking home the crown. However, when it's all said and done, this is the year of the BlueJay in the OC and Southfield wil get the best of Clarkston in the finale and continuing dancing onto the regionals for the first time in close to 30 years.
Class B
Riverview – Academy of Oak Park, Detroit Douglas, New Boston Huron, DH Robichaud
Pick – You can't stop the AOP's "3-headed monster" of scintillating seniors Kendrick Ward, Dimitrius Abner, & Cimerone Porter, you can only hope to contain them!!! Head coach Bobby Thompson and the Rams make history once again and after winning the school's first district last season, they win the school's first ever regional this year, edging Detroit Douglas in double OT in an epic final on Friday night.
Imlay City – Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Pontiac Notre Dame Prep, Detroit Crockett, Mount Clemens
Pick – Really? Is there any question? The Keener Kage Krew is just too good to not be playing in their umpteenth Elite Eight next week. Burney feels bad for his main homeboys, Danny Dulapa, Joey De Martis, and Kellen McCormick and NDP.  Oh, how great it must have felt last Friday night after the Fighting Irish won the district. There was just a small little catch. Following the celebration, the Irish found out they had to play an overwhelmingly-stacked DCD team in the first round of regionals. It's like: Congratulations, fellas, but you're about to be fed to the lions in a few days so enjoy it when it lasts.
Class C
Harper Woods – MH Bishop Foley, Detroit Allen, Melvindale ABT, HW Chandler Park Academy
Pick – I love me some Marc West and Jordan Walker of Bishop Foley, but I don't see them getting past Melvindale ABT to get this regional. The Ventures could end up upsetting Detroit Allen in the semi-finals, however, ABT has Michael Talley, Jr. and Foley doesn't. It's really that simple.
Class D
Birmingham Roeper – Roeper, AH Oakland Christian, AP Inter-City Baptist, MC Cardinal Mooney
Pick – The semi-final between Roeper and Oakland Christian on Monday night should be a classic! The Roughriders might be sporting a gaudy 21-2 record, but they've played some real nailbiters this season and know what it takes to get it done in crunch time. Simply put this regional really only comes down to one thing:
Ryan Zinser, Roeper's sure to be all-state floor general is, RYAN ZINSER and will go all RYAN ZINSER on the comp this week to the tune of the 'Riders first boy's regional title in school history. Let's not forget Zinser's supporting cast – Get busy my main 'Rider homeboys, Jacob Saslow, Cole Stasek, Damani Tilton, and Derek Dunlap too!
