Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Lam-FEARSOME

RAMS START SEASON IN STYLE

The Madison Heights Lamphere Rams, are quite a formidable bunch this season on the baseball diamond. The core of the team – mostly a heavy hitting junior class – has been playing with each other since an elementary school-level little league team eight years ago. Two seasons ago, when the squad was underclassmen dominated with this current junior class as freshman, Lamphere made a major run in the state tournament. Last season, hampered by injuries, they took a little step back. Now, back at full-strength, the Rams are as hot as ever. You should anticipate, Lamphere being one of the best teams, if not THE BEST team, in the county this season and next.
Playing with precision and excitement, this last six days the Rams have been romping through the first annual Oakland County Spring Break Classic and could top the week with some brand new hardware for their school's trophy case by the conclusion of the weekend.
On Wednesday, Lamphere beat up on fellow-OC powerhouse, Lake Orion, in tourney round-robin play. The Rams swept the Dragons 12-4 and 14-4 in a twin bill played at Lamphere. In the first game, Josh Grams had a monster outing, going 2-for-4, blasting two towering home runs, and driving in five runs. Teammate Greg Fettes added a round tripper as well and went 2-for-4 with 3 RBI. Game 2 was headlined by Lamphere's freakish triple-threat athlete combo of juniors Mitch Kozlowski and Ryan Horvath. THA KOZ belted a homer, while going 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and Horvath went YARD while going 2-for-4 with 3 RBI.
These guys simply refuse to take any time off dominating the competition in whatever sport each season provides. In football, Horvath is a top notch-gunslinger under center at QB and THA KOZ MAN is the definition of a dual-threat as a WR/RB/KR/CB. During the winter in basketball season, KOZ runs the point and Horvath plies his trade from the outside as one of the county's best long range bombers.
