Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Off-Season Hoops Report

A couple more college signings to announce:
Congrats go out to Waterford Mott's John Schaeffer and Bloomfield Hills Lahser's Josh Lyle, who will both be playing at the next level next year. Schaeffer, a 6-feet-1 inch shooting guard with monster range and a "J.J Redick-esque" court mentality/aura, has inked with Concordia and Lyle, a 6-feet-5 inch forward with athleticism, touch, and a great upside, has penned with Kentucky State.
Lyle didn't have much time in the limelight these past few years despite putting up some very nice stats, due to his team's lack of success. But make no mistake, this kid is a baller and with the right coaching, he could easily flourish in the college ranks. In a career that will go down as one of the best ever in Corsairs history, Schaeffer, a two year-captain, led the program to back-to-back conference titles for the first time in over two decades.
A couple BAD meaning GOOD AAU performances:
It was nice to hear that Burney's primetime hardwood homies, Drew Holinski of Birmingham Brother Rice and Danny Furlong of OL St. Mary's are playing extremely well for the REAL Legends AAU team so far this off-season.
Holinski, an incoming senior, is a perfect "glue" guy, crashing the boards, diving for loose balls, and always knocking down open shots. I don't know if Holinski's game can translate to D1 ball in 2012 because of his size – he's barely 6-2 and he basically plays from the foul-line down – but I am quite positive that he will make one heck of a D2 or D3 guy.
Furlong, a 6-feet-4 inch forward who will be a junior next season, is the brother of departing Eaglet sniper, Mike Furlong, one of the area's most dangerous outside threats this past two years. Last season, Danny split time between varsity and JV and we never really got a real chance to see him shine on the big stage. That will all change in 2011, as the younger Furlong will be asked to play a much bigger role for head coach George Porritt's squad. If recent output on the court can be used as a barometer, Danny, will be turning some heads next year. Word is that Furlong has been standing out for his AAU team with longstanding ties to St. Mary's, in recent tournament play and that Porritt and co. over at Hoops central on Orchard Lake Road are licking their chops with what they're seeing. Danny is described as having the 3-point shooting ability of his big bro, but with more of a consistent post game.
A couple youngsters to keep your eye out for in 2011:
Max Aleshire (MH Bishop Foley) – this incoming junior is a lights out marksman and rumor has it even though he spent most of his time last season on the JV, he was the best shooter in the school's hoops program by far. I'm not saying, I'm just saying!!! Aleshire has stayed true to his reputation as late and has been shooting the lights out at a series of recent showcase tournaments and combines.
Khalil Malone (Waterford Mott) – Like Aleshire, Malone, a shifty point guard that looks to be the future floor leader for Derek Wiley's Corsairs, has been impressing everyone on the off-season hoops circuit with his playmaking skills. He will be a sophomore next year and will probably team with incoming standout junior Chris Dewberry to replace the departed duo of all-conference studs, John Schaeffer and Devantay Green, in the Mott backcourt.
