Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Home Sweet Home

Burney loves when he sees former prep football stars returning to their respective alma maters and becoming assistant coaches, imparting their wealth of wisdom on today's youth. There are plenty cases of this phenomenon taking place in Oakland County in 2010. Here are a few of Burney's favorite examples:
John Wangler – Royal Oak Shrine
Legendary Knights QB who went on to start at Michigan and win a Rose Bowl in 1981
Charles Talley & Louis Adams – Pontiac
Two of the best prep football players to ever spawn from the city of Pontiac
Dave Sofran – Birmingham Brother Rice
The former WR and QB for the Warriors in the mid-1990s could very easily be the successor to Al Fracassa when it's all said and done
Scott Guthrie – Hazel Park (Head Coach)
This former conference championship-winning linebacker back in the late-1980s for the Vikings has returned to the sidelines and provided stability for his beloved alma mater
Ryan Kaul – Clarkston
"Grade A" former field general for Kurt Richardson's Wolf Pack
Mill Coleman – FH Harrison
"The Thrill" is quite possibly the best prep quarterback to ever play in the state of Michigan
Vince Bean – Southfield
Clutch wide receiver back in the day for the Blue Jays ('81) and then with the UofMichigan Wolverines in the early-1980s
Eddie Hillary – Rochester
One of the best Falcons football players in the last 20 years
Sean Mather – AH Avondale
This recent graduate of the Yellow Jackets program ('09) was a high-quality quarterback and an all-state wrestler while in high school and has returned to help mold his predecessor Mitch Robinson. As evidenced by Robinson's over 600 yards and 8 TDs passing only two games into his junior year, Mather's presence has done wonders for the young signal callers' development.
