Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Opening Day Salute

In giving props to the opening of the MLB season - possibly Burney's favorite time of the year -, here is my all-time all-OC prep baseball team
1B        Matt Conway (Birmingham Brother Rice)
2B        Ryan Keyes (Birmingham DCD)
SS         D.J. Lemahieu (Birmingham Brother Rice)
3B        Chris Sabo (Novi Detroit CC)
C          Bill Freehan (Royal Oak)
DH       Ted Simmons (Southfield)
OF        Kirk Gibson (Waterford Kettering)
OF        Jim Essian, Sr. (Troy)
OF        Bob Malek (Novi Detroit CC)
UTL      Jim Paciorek (OL St. Mary's)
UTL      Mike Grace (Waterford Mott)
P          Bob Welch (Hazel Park)
P          Jim Burton-Andrew Good (Rochester)
P          Brad Havens (RO Kimball)
P          Don Kirkwood (Pontiac Central)
P          Dan Fife (Clarkston)
P          Joe Roa (Hazel Park)
RP        Steve Howe (Clarkston)
*Conway and Keyes are the only player's on this squad without MLB experience. Most likely, Conway, a stud soph in the ACC at Wake Forest, will get some soon. Keyes, who had a career batting average close to the .500 mark, was the state of Michigan's Mr. Baseball in 1997 and led the DCD Yellowjackets to the Class B state title on the diamond as a sophomore in 1995.
