Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

A Little OC Hoop History

Some interesting historical Oakland County prep basketball tidbits
Two county hoopsters have taken home MAC MVP honors over the last 20 years
-          Marcus Kennedy (Troy), 1991, Eastern Michigan
-          David Webber (DCD), 2002, Central Michigan
Speaking of former OC cage greats, Bryan Smothers (Pontiac Northern) and Mike Fugate (Lakeland), are both super floor generals doing a magnificent job leading their respective college teams from the point guard spot. Fugate finished the year third on his team in scoring (13 ppg) and first in assists (4 apg)
Southfield's Carlton Brundidge once scored 21 points in a single quarter back as a sophomore against Southfield-Lathrup – CB's gaudy point total is seventh all time in state history
In 1947, a prep hoop stud from Pontiac and long defunct St. Fredericks named Bob McManus dropped in 61 points in a regular season game
50 years later in 1997, Lathrup's Greg Grays (Penn State/UofD) went for 60
Clarkston's Dane Fife (Indiana), who played for his dad from 1994-1998 before going on to lead the 2002 Hoosiers to an NCAA Final Four, is the 10th all-time leading prep scorer in the history of the state of Michigan. Fife tickled the twine for a total of 2, 287 as him and his dad captured four straight Class A regional championships. The younger Fife is currently a head coach in college at IUPUI-FW
Oakland Christian's Jon Mills shot 50 percent from 3-point range as a three-year varsity performer for the Lancers back in the 1990s. He knocked down 103 of 206 from downtown between 1995 and 1997, good for third all-time in state history.
Southfield Christian's Billy Boldt once hit 12 trifectas in a single game back in 1991, checking in at No. 3 on the state's all-time list.
