Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

The Cager Watch List

A list of prep hoopsters from Oakland County to keep an eye on for breakout seasons in 2012:
Jordan Dasuqi (JR G Clarkston) – Dasuqi is the next Wolfpack backcourt great
Evan Mahone (SR G Troy) – The Colts sparkplug point guard has a crafty game and has gotten continually better every year since entering high school. As a sophomore starting on varsity, he averaged just under 10 points and three assists per game. Last season, he upped it to around 16 and four assists. This winter, I see him to be averaging 20 points, 5 assists and three steals a night, while teaming with nationally-ranked junior wing James Young to give the Colts a quality chance at their first ever Final Four appearance.
Nick Stoll (SR C Holly) – Expect a huge campaign in the paint from this Bronchos' frontcourt stud
Mike Oravetz & Max Aleshire (SR G MH Bishop Foley) – The Ventures' starting backcourt (Oravetz is the playmaker, Aleshire the long-distance specialist) will spark Foley to a repeat Catholic League title and a legit shot at the program's first regional in a decade.
Earl Swift &Quentin Arnold (Jr F Southfield) – With the Bluejays losing the bulk of their lineup from back-to-back state semifinal squads, they'll rely heavily on this talented tandem of wings for the upcoming season.
Charles Hayden (SR F AH Oakland Christian) – If his performance this offseason is any indication, this rangy wing will finally get a full season in his new Lancer digs (he came over from Pontiac NDP last summer) and sprout to full bloom in 2012 as a force from both the inside and outside
Caleb Hogans (JR G North Farmington) – 2012 will be Hogans official coming out party…..he's a genuine force of nature running the offense for the Raiders
Armand Cartwright – (Soph G/F BH Lahser) – Will be one of the best sophomores in Metro Detroit next winter
Sam McClendon (Jr G OL St. Mary's) - The word clutch comes to mind when thinking of McClendon's game from the outside
Richard Katkic (Sr G Novi Detroit CC) - He's sharpe, steady and has a lot of high-energy on both ends of the floor & is set to enter the Shamrocks starting backcourt in place of graduated Shea Kettner this year.
Chuck Sanders (Jr F Lakeland) - The Eagles human pogo stick will develop into more than just an athlete this season and average a double-double....if he stays focused, greatness is in this kid's future
