Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Instant Feedback - Positive Impressions

My impressions from Thursday's action on the prep gridiron

AH Avondale is averaging over 55 points a game after two weeks. Coach Deutch's squad RAN all over the Hazel Park 'D' on Thursday night, with two Yellow Jackets' running backs eclipsing the century mark on the ground. Burney's 2011 SLEEPER KING, Michael Johnson, had another great outing, racking up 285 yards and 4 TDS, while Henry Paul picked up 115 yards and one score in Avondale's 64-44 downing of the Vikings.
So let me get this straight, FH Harrison junior Eddie Huckebly is a SUPER STUD on offense, too? Huck-a-buck went buck, running for a TD and catching another in the Hawks 28-14 slug-it-out victory over Southfield. As a sophomore last season, he started at linebacker for the school's 13th state championship team. Adding EH into the mix in the Harrison backfield, gives the once pass-heavy Hawks a FIVE-headed monster rushing the rock!!!! Can u say DANGEROUS?
The Walled Lake Northern Knights are averaging close to 50 points a game, putting up their first win of the season on Thursday with a 42-21 defeat of South Lyon East. Burney's calling his shot: When it's all said and done on the 2011 season, Knights quarterback Kirk Thomas will end up the most prolific quarterback in Western Oakland County in terms of statistics.
Troy junior quarterback Justin Losey went all MICHAEL VICK on Royal Oak, slicing and dicing his way to SIX touchdowns in the Colts first win of the year.
One of Burney favorite blazing hot newcomers this season is Clawson quarterback Blake Blue. Not only does this kid have an AWESOME name, he's played outstanding under center in leading the Trojans to consecutive wins to open up the season.
Just start calling my MAIN Maples homeboy John Glazier, "PRIMETIME" because this Birmingham Seaholm field general shines his brightest under the Friday Night Lights…. JG went surgical on the BH Andover secondary, going 10-for-11 through the air for 288 yards and three TDS, while punching in another pair of scores on the ground. Let's just say Glazier can play a little pigskin, shall we!
MATT SARACEN ALERT - A pair of backup signal callers looked stellar under center on Thursday night as well;
Oak Park's Nate Simms got the nod and led the Knights to a 41-7 torching of Stoney Creek by chucking three beautifully-thrown TD strikes
&
Novi's Derek Ince, a starter last season, connected on 15-0f-29 passing attempts for 157 yards and four total touchdowns, three through the air.
K.J. Schultz is a STRAIGHT KILLER on the football field – This VICIOUS VIKING put 398 total yards of offense for WL Central in its 42-27 win over Salem.
It was a full-out COMING OUT PARTY for Lake Orion sophomore Corey Ester, who blasted onto the county split end scene by catching a pair of TD passes in the Dragons 35-7 dousing of Rochester.
