Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

TROJANS RAIN ON MOTT'S PARADE AS TERRIFIC TWOSOME TAKE CLAWSON TO HARD-FOUGHT WIN ON THE ROAD
The Clawson High School football team had little regard for being pleasant house guests on Saturday afternoon. Dampening the high spirits at the Warren Mott homecoming game, the Trojans blanked their hosts 21-0, vaulting their overall record to 5-1 and moving only one win away from both a second straight playoff appearance and clinching at least a share of the MAC Gold title.
The only blemish on the Trojans record this season is a loss to state powerhouse Marine City.
Clawson's all-league pair of dynamic offensive threats, De Shawn Gilbert and Deonte Hill, sparked the Trojans to the victory with their high profile brand of playmaking.
Hill's 73-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter put the Trojans on top 7-0, a lead they took into halftime.
Showing off his versatility, Hill scooped up a bad snap on a Mott punt and returned it for another score in the third quarter to make it 14-0.
Gilbert, who led the team's ground assault with 105 yards rushing, zoomed into the end zone from 32 yards out late in the fourth quarter to put the game on ice.
Like his talented buddy Hill, Gilbert is versatile on the gridiron. With Clawson starting quarterback Blake Blue battling injury, he took snaps under center for a portion of the contest. The dizzying duo can both play multiple positions, including QB, RB, WR, CB, KR, PR, LB.
The Trojans will celebrate their own homecoming next Friday night, as they host St. Clair Lake Shore. To close out the 2011 regular season, Clawson will play Mt. Clemens in Week 8 and St. Clair Shores Lakeview in Week 9. Last fall, Trojans head coach Jim Sparks took the program back to the postseason following a three-year absence, due to a trifecta of 5-4 campaigns.
