Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Back On The Market

Wide open is the best way to describe the current state of local prep football star Josh Jones' college recruitment.
Walled Lake Western's standout defensive back de-committed from Toledo this week, after garnering several recent scholarship offers from the Big 10 and rampant speculation that more BCS schools will come calling soon.
Jones has secured offers from Michigan State, Iowa and Illinois in the last two weeks. He previously committed to Toledo after an on-campus visit during the first weekend of May.
Last season as a junior, Jones was an all-league pick at cornerback, making 35 tackles, two interceptions, eight pass deflections and returning three punts for touchdowns, while helping lead Western to a league title and an appearance in the final four.
This fall, the rangy and lightning-quick 6-foot-3 ballhawk will line up at both safety spots, most likely his future position at the college level. Western head coach Mike Zdebski and his staff expect to feature Jones on offense this upcoming campaign too, so pencil him in for at least 10 touches a game on the other side of the ball.
When the 2012 season kicks off in a few months, this MEGA WARRIOR and SECONDARY SENSATION will be one of the top players in the state on a Western squad looked at as a favorites to repeat as league champs and make another long run in the playoffs.
