Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

A Grand Gesture

After three tireless and incredibly productive years on the high school varsity football field, Farmington Hills Harrison star lineman Jake Slobin has committed to play his college pigskin at Grand Valley State.
Slobin was a tenacious ballhawk in the trenches for the perennial state-power Hawks, leading the team in tackles this past season, recording 97 wrap-ups (a eye-popping 30 for losses)and 9 sacks.
Starting since he was a sophomore, anchoring the Hawks point of attack, he helped take Harrison to three consecutive postseason appearances and a state championship in 2010.
Playing football at Harrison for legendary sideline general John Herrington is in his bloodline. His father, brother and uncles all played for Herrington's Hawks in their respective days as prepsters.
Grand Valley State (8-3 in 2012) has gone wild in the recruiting Oakland County this week. Bringing Slobin on board was the fourth player from the area to commit to be a Laker in the past five days.
The standout Southfield trio of Brandon Bean (WR), Tre Walton (WR) and Jeff Madison (LB) all gave commitments to GVSU over the weekend.
