Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Seeing It All Come Together

Kudos to the West Bloomfield baseball team and coaching staff for turning early-chemistry issues into a late flourish and a magical trek through the state tournament, all the way to the SWEET 16, where the Lakers got nipped 2-0 by Brighton in the regional finals.
Although the WB looked as sharp as knife on paper to start the season – Sedat, Birnberg, Allread, Seidel, Jones, etc joining forces with star transfers the Cole brothers (aka Big D Crush and Baby D Crush) – it had a few bumps in the road until they found that perfect balance.
Skip Eric Pierce and his club sat 7-7 at the start of May. According to Pierce, his seniors rallied the troops. With some elite leadership and overall playmaking, the squad's sizzling senior class ended up spurring the Lakers to 17 wins in their last 21 games, including bouncing heavy-favorite Birmingham Brother Rice to kickoff their postseason jaunt, and grabbing their first district title since 2007.
GREAT JOB, FELLAS!! You did the job and did it with class, precision and POWER. The 2014 WB diamond-cutting crew will be etched in LAKESHOW history forever, as the picture of resolve and a tribute to the beautiful music that can be made when there is the kind of combined sacrifice exhibited like you had in WBLAND this spring.
