Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

The More Sleepers The Better

LOCAL GRIDIRON RECRUITS TURNING HEADS WITH OFF-SEASON OUTPUT
Last week, Burney dropped a little knowledge regarding some of the area's top sleepers in the college football recruiting game – QB Mike Sullivan (WOLL), S Alex Fine (Lake Orion), and OL Bryan Bell (WL Central), were all shouted out and with very good reason. Well, there's a couple more quality "sleepers" that deserve recognition. And Burney's gonna tell you about' em!
Top OC "sleeper" recruits, Allen Robinson (OL St. Mary's) and Devontey Snyder (MH Madison), are flying up the scouting reports and Burney's here to give you the skinny.
Robinson, a 6-3 wide receiver/defensive back combo, is wowing the socks off the scouts with his raw, virtually-untapped potential. His big hands and superior attitude and willingness to be coached has made him a serious target in recruiting circles around the Midwest. He made an official visit to Penn State two weekends ago to watch the Nittany Lions play their annual Blue-White Spring Game.  Because of injuries Robinson didn't get his first real varsity playing time until last season. By the end of the '09 campaign, which saw St. Mary's make an unexpected run all the way into the D2 state title game at Ford Field, Robinson was blowing up, displaying breakaway speed and big play ability on both offense and defense.
Other Schools Looking at my man, "AL B SURE" â€“ Michigan, MSU, Wisconsin, Missouri, CMU, WMU, Toledo (offer on table), Purdue, Syracuse, Indiana, Illinois
Snyder is the ultimate "sleeper" – quietly but effectively plying his trade as a CAT-quick and hard-hitting linebacker the past two years in the shadow of AN high-octane MH Madison offense led by star player, Valdez Showers (one of the top 10 recruits in the state for the Class of 2011).  After what Snyder did last weekend at the Nike Training Combine in Columbus, Ohio, his time left in the shadows will be minimal. In other words, he turned a lot of heads, made a lot of nasty tackles, graded out excellently in the physical intangible drills, thus rocketed his stock in recruiting circles up about 20 notches. His play in Ohio was so out of the is world that ESPN took notice and wrote him up in their post-combine report as being someone who stood out against a talented roster of participants at his position.
As of right now, Michigan, MSU, Iowa, and Toledo are showing interest in Synder, but more schools are sure to be coming on board in the Synder Sweepstakes after what he did a few days ago.
Three more OC'ers that looked BAD meaning GOOD in Ohio at the Columbus Nike event:
1 LB/FB            Tim "Jumbo" Hamilton (Brother Rice)
2 WR/S            Kenny Knight (DCD),
3 TE                 Jake Duzey (Troy Athens)
DON'T SLEEP ON "AL B SURE" 'S TEAMMATE, COREY LUCAS, A TOUGH AS NAILS RUNNING BACK/DEFENSIVE BACK COMBO AT ST. MARY'S THAT WILL BE GETTING HIS SHARE OF COLLEGE INTEREST AS WELL IN THE COMING MONTHS
