Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Five For Fighting - What's in a Name?

OC TOP 5 - School Nicknames
1.      Lake Orion Dragons – Burney loves him some fire-breathing fun

2.   (tie)   Birmingham Roeper Roughriders – The 'Riders get an 'A' for originality

2. (tie) Waterford Mott Corsairs – Burney doesn't know exactly what a Corsair is, but like with the Roeper Roughriders, its creativity and uniqueness that counts in this writer's mind…we can only have so many squads with an Eagle for a mascot…lol
3.
Birmingham Seaholm Maples
– The Maples is such an appropriate nickname for the leafy suburb it represents so proudly

4.      Rochester Adams Highlanders – I'm going to switch up my boy Wiz Khalifa's lyrics and say simply….Brown & Yellow, Brown &Yellow, Brown & Yellow!!

5.      Troy Colts – Forget about what the owner of the NFL's Oakland Raiders says, in the city of Troy, the GOOD GUYS WEAR BLACK!!!
