Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Super Dave

Karma is a funny thing sometimes
Just when you think things are destined to keep going against your favor, the tide turns and fate smiles upon you.
Welcome to the life of Dave Muczynski the past eight months.
After Muczynski, Auburn Hills Avondale's man of all seasons, holding head coaching duties for the Yellowjackets girls basketball team and boys and girls soccer squads, suffered back-to-back heartbreaks during his last two treks into the state tournament, he might have thought the prep sports gods had an all-out vendetta against him.
They didn't.
It was only a matter of time.
On Saturday afternoon, Muczynski's Avondale boys soccer team upended Spring Lake 1-0 in the Division 2 state finals, allowing the longtime 'Jackets' sideline general (1993-present) to grab his first ever state championship as a coach.
Boy, does Muczynski, the definition of a class act both on and off the field of battle, deserve the accomplishment.
Back in March, Muczynski's girls hoop squad won its second consecutive league crown before losing a nail-biter to Detroit Renaissance in the SWEET 16.
Following a upset of defending state champion Birmingham Marian in the districts, his girls soccer team fell 1-0 in the next match to Cinderella Madison Heights Lamphere.
To say, he was due is the understatement of the century.
Congrats Coach Dave! And just for the record, Burney feels another state title on the horizon soon.
This winter, Muczynski's girls basketball team will feature all-state forward Hannah Little (St. Bonaventure) and be a favorite for another long run come March Madness.
