Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Checking Myself

In a previous blog post and a recent Prep Chat video, I incorrectly identified the current Walled Lake Central JV basketball coach as John Spolsky, instead of his younger brother and actual Vikings sideline general, Chuck Spolsky.
The Spolsky boys were both star athletes at Novi Detroit Catholic Central, each etching their names in the Shamrocks storied record books in their time wearing the Blue and White.
Sadly, John Spolsky, one of the greatest athletes in CC school history, was killed in a car accident in September 2004, days prior to shipping out to Iraq as part of an elite regiment within the U.S. military.
I sincerely apologize to the Spolsky family and CC community if my actions have opened up old wounds. I should have done my homework better. It will not happen again.
Chuck Spolsky, a leading candidate for the vacant Walled Lake Central boys varsity basketball head coaching slot, is also the Vikings defensive coordinator on the football field in the fall and after a standout three-sport career at CC in the late 1990s, went on to play his college ball at Adrian.
Graduating in 1996, John Spolsky was a first-team all-state pick on the gridiron and the wrestling mat, winning Class A state championships in both. He continued his athletic career in college, wrestling for the Air Force Academy.
