Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Five For Fighting - Destroying The Bracket

Five For Fighting – Biggest upsets on the prep baseball diamond from district final Saturday
1 RH Adams – Just as your boy Burney predicted, Adams pulled the SUPERSONIC UPSET on OAA Blue champ AH Avondale…MAD PROPS for a game-sealing two-run JACK by Alex Borglin and a lights out performance on the mound from hurler Sean Beyer!!!!
2 OL St. Mary's – TEAM PETRY benefited from a brutal regular season schedule to come alive at exactly the right time and walk away with arguably the toughest division 2 district in the whole state. Senior pitcher Brandon Willard was VERLANDER-ESQUE against defending district champ BH Andover in the final, going 6 2/3 and racking up 9 strikeouts against a formidable Barons' line-up in the Eaglets 5-1 upset victory
3 MH Lamphere – The young and hungry Rams were too hot to handle late in the season, displaying their massive improvement by winning the Warren Fitz district and making amends for early state tourney flameouts with much more talented squads the past two years. Skipper Adam Wooley is one of the top dugout tacticians around and he showed why this spring!!
4 Waterford Lakes – THE BLUE CREW was more like a wrecking crew on the diamond Saturday, knocking off defending district champ and heavy favorite RH Lutheran NW in a D4 district championship tilt
5 Novi Detroit CC – They didn't end up winning their district, but make no mistake, the Shamrocks made quite an impression with their play on Saturday. First, CC, which made a run into the quarters last spring, however, struggled this year in the regular season, eliminated district host and favorite North Farmington in the semis by a pronounced margin and then came within inches of pulling a second straight upset over Novi in the district finals before going down valiantly in defeat 6-5.
