Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

In The Money

Former Oakland County prep hoopster Javale McGee is about to get paid. I'm talking 10 mil-a-year paid.
The NBA big fella, who is entering his fifth year in the league, is on the verge of signing a MEGA contract, either with his current Denver Nuggets or any other in a variety of eager suitors.
McGee, the son of former NBA'er George Montgomery and Woman's hoop legend Pam McGee, prepped for Birmingham Detroit Country Day in the mid-2000s. He wasn't that developed at the time and didn't get much clock.
My, how things have changed!
A first-round NBA Draft Pick of the Washington Wizards in 2008, following playing his college ball at Nevada, the 7-footer with an ULTRASICK wingspan and CRAZYMAD HOPS has turned himself into quite the pro hardwood talent. The past two seasons, he's averaged 10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and a pair of blocks a night, mostly coming off the bench and seeing less than 25 minutes per contest.
Along with McGee, recently-crowned world champion Shane Battier of the Miami Heat and Keith Benson of the Golden State Warriors, both also DCD products, and the Pistons Walker Russell, Jr. from Rochester are currently the only players from Oakland County to be collecting an NBA paycheck.
