Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Lathrup Landslide

The prep hoop gods were kind to the Southfield-Lathrup girls basketball program this past offseason.
Already a traditional local power, Lathrup was the benefactor of a landslide of high-profile transfers in the offseason – three to be exact –, immediately catapulting head coach Michelle Marshall and the Chargers into the conversation for Breslin Center bragging rights.
Here's a look at whose coming into the mix at Lathrup this winter on the girls high school hardwood. Entering this 2012-2013 campaign, the Chargers have raised two straight Class A district championship banners and won a state title back in 2005.
1 Sydni Davis – Coming over from West Bloomfield where she took the Lakers to a district crown last March, Davis is arguably the best girls basketball player in Oakland County for the Class of 2013. She's a fast and spunky scoring machine that can also create for her teammates and cause havoc on defense. Davis is committed to D1 Stetson University down in Florida.
2 Sabria Cotton – Joining the Chargers from Troy, Cotton is a smooth and steady D1 recruit that will be a more-than-adequate 'Robin' to Davis' 'Batman' as she closes out her prep career in a Lathrup uniform this year
3 Asia King – A fast-improving inside-outside combo entering her junior year that should close the 2013 season as one of the top players in the county. Gritty and silky at the same time, with a quick first step, the ability to finish in the transition and has a nice touch around the rim.
The Chargers' top returner is Christina Green, a do-everything 2-guard, already committed to Wayne State.
Expect Lathrup to win the OAA Red this season and have the shot at a long run come March Madness time.
