Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Grand Valley Backer

Clarkston senior football star Chris Calvano is a linebacker's linebacker.
Whether calling signals in the huddle or racking up tackles sideline-to-sideline, he is a genuine difference-maker on defense.
On Monday, Calvano, a 6-foot-2, 200-pound defensive menace for the K-RICH Wolfpack the past few years, committed to play his college pigskin at Grand Valley State.
Back in the fall, Calvano helped lead C-Town to both league and district championships.
Football is in this kid's blood….so is playing the position of linebacker – his older brothers Matt and Sean are both former standout Wolfpack linebackers.
GVSU, a traditional national D2 power, went 8-3 this year.
Head coach Matt Mitchell carried a dozen players who prepped in Oakland County on his 2012 roster. my homeboy C-Squared is the fifth gridiron warrior from the OC prep ranks to commit to GVSU in the past month, joining Southfield's Tre Walton (WR), Brandon Bean (WR) and Jeff Madison (LB) and FH Harrison's Jake Slobin (DL)
