Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Thanks For The Memories

With legendary B'ham DCD head boys basketball coach Kurt Keener announcing his resignation Friday, let's take a gander at Burney's All-Time Top Keener Kage Proteges
Richard Goldberg – Keener's first great pure scorer
Damon Jones – Keener's first great point guard
Jimmy Bolden –Smooth and savvy combo guard that just missed the state title era
Chris Webber – Most talented player Keener ever coached
Shane Battier –Hardest-worker, craftiest and smartest player Keener ever coached
Ije Nwankwo – Most underrated player Keener ever coached
David Webber-Mike Manciel – Battier's teammates on all 3 state titles he won and all-state gunners on the perimeter
Darnell Brown & Clayton Beard – Paired in the backcourt to lead Keener to his first state crown ('07) without an NBA Lottery Pick anchoring the post
Ray McCallum & Amir Williams – McDonalds All-American tandem that led the KEENER KAGE KREW to state title No. 8
Edmond Sumner –The last TRUE GREAT cage star Keener mentored on the hardwood
Keith Benson & Javalle McGee – Didn't get tons of clock under Keener but he instilled in them the deep-rooted fundamentals that have helped both reach the NBA
