Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Saints Keep Marching

With the news last week that Orchard Lake St. Mary's alum and NCAA All-American wide receiver Allen Robinson (close to 1450 yards, 6 TDs) is declaring for the 2014 NFL Draft, the proud Eaglets' gridiron legacy continued to grow.
At 6-foot-3, 215-pounds, Robinson (the top split in the Big Ten statistically this past season), is projected anywhere from a high first-round to a mid-second round pick come April).
He will be the 16th player mentored on the prep gridiron by longtime St. Mary's coach George Porritt to enter the pro ranks upon his selection.
That's a pretty awesome number.
No. 17 is almost a certainty coming down the pike as well in current Michigan linebacker James Ross.
Before going any further, let's not forget that my man Al B Sure was a lights-out talent on the high school hardwood, too, earning all-state honors as a primetime small forward and taking the Eaglets into the Class A 'Elite 8' as a senior in 2011.
