Blogs > Burney's Bytes
Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

MH Lamphere baseball coach, Adam Wooley, has gone on record as saying that he believes that junior centerfielder Mitch Kozlowski is the "best defensive player in the entire state." That's a bold statement, there skip........and I 100% AGREE WITH YOU!
I'll go a step further, THA KOZ is the best lead-off hitter in the Metro Detroit area in the Class of 2011. U CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!
Mad props go out to my main hurling homeboys, Keith Otterbein of Birmingham Seaholm and Conor Reid of Berkley, who both pitched complete-game gems in wins for their respective teams on Thursday. Reid K'd 10 Hazel Park batters in the Bears 4-0 victory. Otterbein had 8 k's in the Maples 3-1 win against West Bloomfield.
Speaking of sizzling arms, I just want to say that Southfield Christian's Andy Hoffenbacher might be playing at a small school, but I'm guaranteeing anybody that he would be doing more of less the same thing (tearing it up from the pitching rubber) this season if he was playing up in Class A or B ball.
Burney loves him some Nick Regnier of the Novi Wildcats this year. And as a result of that love, I'm giving him a nickname. From now on, Regnier – a senior standout on both the basketball hardwood and the baseball diamond – will be known as….drum roll, please…………"THE RIPPER". Why you ask? Well, isn't it obvious? THIS KID OUT AND OUT LETS IT RIP EVERYTIME HE ON THE FIELD OF BATTLE. It sounds pretty good, right?
For example – Nick "The Ripper" Regnier, ripped away Wednesday afternoon in Novi's 11-1 thrashing of conference-foe Livonia Stevenson by getting busy for three hits and five RBI, including, what else?, a gigantic blast of a GRAND SALAMI in the fourth inning.
Question of The Week:
Is Farmington's P.J. Cooley (Hillsdale) a better power pitcher – 13 k's in a win on Saturday – or power hitter – 2 home runs and 5 RBI in a win on Wednesday?
Everyone knows about what a lethal offense the Highlanders at RH Adams are sporting this year on the baseball diamond, but Burney is extra-impressed with the buckle down-job being put forth by the squad's under-heralded pitching rotation. Head coach Chuck Van Robays staff has been a major league surprise this season and a primary reason the Highlanders are 15-3.
"ARMS RACE" – the finish line being in Cereal City in June – ROLL CALL:
Ryan Strum
Mike Johnson
Matt Nestor
Nick Druzinski (Also the team's best hitter)
I've decided to nickname the Adams roaring rotation, "The Get'r Done Crew", because like the saying goes, these guys simply, "Get 'r Done". They might not do it with the flash and velocity that last season's ace, Andrew Waszak (MSU), did it with, but they "Get 'r Done" just as successfully nonetheless. GET BUSY "GET r' DONE CRIZZZZZLE"!
