Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

TAMMARO AND BINGHAM COMMITT AS COUNTY SENDS TWO MORE TO PLAY SPORTS AT THE D1 LEVEL
Two more ace high school athletes from the ranks of Oakland County have been rewarded scholarships to play sports in college. Football star Brandon Tammaro (Novi Detroit Catholic Central) and basketball standout Urbane Bingham (North Farmington) each sorted out their respective playing destinations prior to the start of their senior years and verbally committed to Division I universities this week.
Tomorrow Is NOW!
Tammaro, a 6-3 235 lb defensive end who started for the Shamrocks last season on what many are calling possibly the best defense in the history of the county, committed to Buffalo on Tuesday. Selecting the Bison over other MAC pursuers like CMU, WMU and Ohio, Tammaro also is a gritty power forward on the CC basketball team. As a junior, he collected 10 sacks and came away with two key sacks in the team's win over SH Stevenson in the D1 state championship game in 2009. This fall, Tammaro will be a captain and headline a defense still ready to pack a serious punch in spite of the hits in personnel that it has been forced to endure due to graduation. Alongside in the trenches with Tammaro and someone certain to benefit from being around guys like him and fellow defensive co-captains JUstin D'agostino and Andrew Nelson, will be junior Matt Godin, a fast-rising line prospect some in the program are comparing to former CC gridiron great Mark Messner (Michigan).
Bada Boom, Bada Bing
Bingham (6-8), one of the best and most-polished big men in the area, committed to Texas Praire View A&M on Sunday after returning from an on-campus visit down in the Lonestar State this past weekend. Starting his prep career at Birmingham Detroit Country Day, Bingham transferred to North Farmington last summer, getting to play the last half of the season with the Raiders' hoop squad and turning heads with his rugged performance. This big fella can go inside and out and still has some baby fat to lose, which tells you his athleticism - already a very good attribute to his game - could be set to improve over the next few years. The combo of being able to bang down low in the paint and and possessing a silky touch and nice range for a post player. His near-flawless free throw shooting percentage is also a big plus for the PV coaching staff - Ben Wallace/Shaquile O'Neal he isn't.
Over the summer Bingham played on a travel all-star team from the state that barnstormed across Europe. Those who saw him play say he has improved since last year, primarily in the stamina and mental toughness department. These are good signs. Expect Bingham to lead the Raiders back into contention for the conference crown, despite the loss of a strong senior class from 2010. While Bingham will be back patrolling the paint and most-likely becoming the squad's No.1 scoring option (replacing the point splurging, Kyle Vinales) this winter and will be sharing the scoring load with two highly thought of juniors in Dorrell Foster and Caleb Combs (the leading scorers on the Raiders' JV team last season. As a sophomore at DCD, Bingham was a defensive lineman on the Yellowjackets football squad that made an appearance at Ford Field in the D3 state title game. .
