Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

From almost out of nowhere, South Lyon East quarterback Cam Thomas will be Oakland County's top-rated prep quarterback come the start of the 2012 season.
Standing 6-foot-4, Thomas can dissect defenses with his powerful arm and pin-point accuracy, but he also has wheels and can hurt opposing defenses with his feet, too. As a junior in 2011, he threw for almost 1,800 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Taking no prisoners on the offseason camp, combine and tourney scene, Thomas, who will be entering his third year calling signals this fall, currently has scholarship offers from D1 Bowling Green and D2 Grand Valley State.
During the winter sports season, he's a high-scoring forward on SLE's varsity hockey squad.
The Cougars have only been a school since 2008.
Last fall, Thomas and the football team finished strong, winning its final two games of the year, while averaging 29 points per contest, to close out the 2011 campaign 3-6.
South Lyon East kicks off the upcoming season on August 24th at home against Waterford Kettering, an extremely winnable game for Thomas and Co.
