Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

EDucating the Competition

Let me hit you with some factual knowledge;
Birmingham Detroit Country Day junior basketball star Edmund Sumner is the best guard in Oakland County right now……YEAH, I SAID IT!!!!
All due respect to Jon-Jon, Akhemji, Dasuqi and Sumner's backcourt-mate Austin Price, but BIG ED is the top gun in the OC.
He has no flaws in his game.
Last year as a super soph he was a nails-tough, slasher who was 5-foot-11 and 130 pounds soaking wet.
This season, Sumner has taken things to the NEXT LEVEL; he grew five inches, put on 25 pounds, while also developing MAD floor general skills and a lights-out stroke from downtown. CAN YOU SAY FEARLESS?
On Monday, he dropped a 20-point, eight-dime effort in taking DCD to its eighth straight trip to the ELITE 8 with a beat-down of Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy in the Class B regional finals. His "pogo-stick" alley-oop in the second half of Monday's smashing brought the home crowd to its feet. Xavier and UMass are the biggest college programs to offer Sumner a scholarship so far, but with what this PTP'er has been doing lately, more elite schools are sure to be entering the picture soon. Watch for Sumner to etch his name among the all-time DCD backcourt greats before he graduates next June. I smell another KEENER KAGE KREW state crown with BIG ED at the helm of the 'Jackets offense.....TAKE IT 2 THE BANK!!!
