Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

The Lakes Sports Report

Some news from the Waterford Our Ladies of the Lakes athletic front;
Last winter, the WOLL girls basketball team got some help from super transfer Carlee Cottrell in its trip to a repeat Class D state championship.
Could we be in store for some déjà vu this upcoming season?
Burney thinks there's a very good chance!!!
In 2012, when the Lakers are going for the 3-PEAT, they will have the services of another high-end transfer in Tori Duffy, who has starred on the hardwood over at Walled Lake Central the past few years.
A two-time all-league selection with the Vikings, Duffy averaged 16 points, four assists and three steals a game last season. Combining forces with returning WOLL stud hoopstresses, Cottrell, Lexie Robak and Ava Doetch, her presence in the Lakers' lineup will do wonders for the team's opportunity to raise a third consecutive banner. It will also help seriously cushion the blow of losing three-time all-state pick Lauren Robak, Lexie's older sister, now playing at Oakland University.
Cottrell was a two-year starter at AH Oakland Christian before joining the Lake Show last fall and making a seamless transition into the fold with the Blue and White. She is one of the best pure shooters in Metro Detroit, regardless of school size.
The younger Robak and Doetch, each entering their junior year this fall, have started since they were freshman. Duffy and Cottrell are both seniors. Also look for standout Lakers role players Jessica Parry and Haley Howell to pick of some the scoring slack left by Mrs. 4th Quarter (aka Lauren Robak).
A couple of names from the WOLL football team (2-1) that have impressed me so far this season;
Sal Mastromatteo – This freshman has looked very solid under center starting at quarterback
Mitch Lasceski – Has shined on both sides of the ball, whether going sideline-to-sideline from his spot at linebacker or hitting them up between the tackles as a yardage-churning Lakers running back
Garrett Ross – Burney is having a difficult time figuring out if his main man GR is a better high-scoring forward on the basketball floor or a big-play tight end on the gridiron……TOUGH CALL!!!
