Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

The Walk-On Report

There will be a number of Class of 2012 prep football studs trying to leave their marks this upcoming gridiron campaign as D1 preferred walk-ons.
Danny Furlong (Orchard Lake St. Mary's) – The former Eaglets two-sport star will be wearing No. 73 for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish this fall. Last season, he was captain of the St. Mary's O-Line on a team that won a Division 3 state championship. Furlong was a terror patrolling the post for the St. Mary's hoop squad, too, helping take the Eaglets to back-to-back Class A regional titles.
Dan Gibbs (Birmingham Seaholm) – After anchoring Seaholm in the trenches for the past three seasons, GIBBY will be wearing the Maize and Blue this year as a member of the University of Michigan Wolverines up in Ann Arbor. Make no mistake about it, this MAPLE MEGA BALLER left a major imprint on his high school's football program before taking off for college, leading SEAHOLMNATION back into the postseason for the first time since 2005.
Cortez Hardrick (West Bloomfield) – This under-the-radar LAKESHOW gem at the wide receiver position will be PUTTING IN WORK this season Central Michigan.
Jalen Campbell (West Bloomfield) – This under-the-radar LAKESHOW gem at the tailback position will be PUTTING IN WORK this season at Western Michigan.

Let's not forget Walled Lake Central's Zac Leimbach, the Vikings' 3-sport SUPERSTAR, set to walk-on the Michigan State football team.
