Blogs > Burney's Bytes

Burney's Bytes will focus primarily on the local preps sports scene, but will also touch on some college and pro athletics, mostly in regards to athletes who hail and have played high school sports in Oakland County. My goal for the blog is to be conversational and anecdotal, a more relaxed and free formal take on high school athletics than you see in regular game day coverage.

Sideline To Sideline

Don't do a double take if you're at a Birmingham Seaholm football game this season and you see former Clawson boys basketball coach Billy Shellenbarger on the Maples sidelines.
You're not going crazy.
Shellenbarger has changed roles.
No longer a hoops head coach because of grad school responsibilities, COACH SHELL accepted an invitation from first-year Seaholm head football coach Jim DeWalt to join his staff and become one of his top assistants.
Good move. With Shellenbager wearing the head phones flanking COACH D-NASTY the Maples are 2-1 and looking as prime contenders in the race for the OAA Blue crown, rolling out one of the top defenses in the area.
While on the bench at Clawson, COACH SHELL led the Trojans to back-to-back league championships in the MAC and sparked a much-needed resurgence on the CLAWVILLE high school hardwood.
In high school, Shellenbarger was an iron-spirited star baller for his pops up in Gladwin, before going on to have standout career in college in the GLIAC at Lake Superior State.
If the Maples GRIDIRON GANG can make a second straight appearance in the playoffs this fall, you can better believe COACH SHELL will be a big reason why!!
